Fade Dark Spots On Face: 6 Home Remedies

Dark spots are melanin already sitting in your skin. You cannot bleach it out, so everything below works by slowing the enzyme that makes new pigment and speeding up how fast the marked cells shed. Patch test each one on your jaw for 24 hours first. Start with number one.

1. Mulethi and curd spot paste

The strongest recipe here. Mulethi contains glabridin, which inhibits tyrosinase directly, and it has more clinical backing than anything else in your kitchen.

  • ½ tsp mulethi powder, sieved fine
  • 2 tbsp plain curd

Whisk until completely smooth with no grit. Dab on the dark patches only, not the whole face. Leave overnight, rinse in the morning.

Four nights a week. Give it eight to twelve weeks before you judge it, because this one is slow and it does not announce itself.

If your skin is oily and curd feels heavy, swap it for two tablespoons of plain aloe gel.

2. Turmeric, besan and rose water mask

Curcumin suppresses melanin production, and besan handles the staining problem that stops most people from using turmeric at all.

  • 1 tbsp besan
  • a pinch of turmeric, preferably Kasturi
  • rose water to mix

Aim for a paste that spreads without dripping. Fifteen minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water, rubbing gently in circles as you go so the besan does a little exfoliating on the way off.

Twice a week. Kasturi turmeric stains far less than the cooking kind and costs about the same, so use it if you can find it. If you have something important in three days, test on your jaw first.

3. Green tea and honey brightening mask

EGCG, the main polyphenol in green tea, interferes with melanin production and calms inflammation at the same time. That second part matters, because irritation is what darkens spots in the first place.

  • 1 used green tea bag, cooled, contents scraped out
  • 1 tsp raw honey
  • ½ tsp rice flour

Mix into a loose paste, apply all over, leave 15 minutes, rinse.

Three times a week. Keep leftover brewed tea in a spray bottle in the fridge for up to three days and spritz it on after cleansing, morning and night. That habit alone is worth as much as the mask.

4. Papaya and honey enzyme mask

Papain breaks down the protein bonds holding dead cells together. Enzymatic exfoliation, which is gentler and slower than acid.

  • 2 tbsp ripe papaya, mashed smooth
  • ½ tsp honey

Twenty minutes, then rinse. Twice a week, no more.

Semi-ripe papaya has more papain and works faster, but it tingles and is much easier to overdo. If you use it, cap it at 10 minutes and wash it off immediately if the tingle turns into a sting.

Not on the same day as any other exfoliating mask on this list.

5. Amla and curd brightening pack

Vitamin C inhibits tyrosinase, but it is unstable, so the bottled amla powder that has been open in your cupboard since last winter has very little left in it.

  • 2 tsp fresh amla juice, or 1 tsp amla powder mixed fresh
  • 1 tbsp plain curd

Mix and use within the hour. On the spots, 15 minutes, rinse.

Twice a week. And eat the amla too, through the season. Vitamin C does more for pigmentation from the inside than from a mask, which is not what most beauty blogs want you to hear.

6. Aloe and vitamin E overnight gel

Best for acne marks specifically. Aloe contains aloesin, a mild tyrosinase inhibitor, but its real value is settling inflammation so marks fade faster and darken less on their way out.

  • 2 tbsp fresh aloe vera gel
  • 1 vitamin E capsule, pierced

Apply at night, leave on, rinse in the morning. Safe to use daily.

If you are cutting an aloe leaf yourself, stand it upright for 15 minutes and let the yellow sap drain out, then rinse the fillet before scooping the clear gel. That yellow latex is aloin and it irritates skin, which is the usual reason a fresh aloe DIY backfires.

Four things that decide whether any of this works

Sunscreen. Every morning, reapplied at midday if you step out. UV switches on tyrosinase directly, so three months of nightly mulethi can be undone by a few unprotected afternoons. This is the real reason most people conclude home remedies do not work.

Pick one, not six. Rotating through everything on this list means that when your skin reacts, you will have no idea what caused it. Choose the recipe that matches your spot type and stay with it.

Photograph your face on day one, in daylight, in the same spot. Gradual fading is nearly impossible to see in a mirror you look at daily, and most people give up two weeks before it would have shown.

Eight to twelve weeks. That is the honest timeline for pigment. Anything promising seven days is selling something.
