Shampoos are generally considered as hair cleansing agent, but when choosing shampoo it’s important to consider your scalp also.

Always remember that you should choose shampoo on basis of scalp condition and conditioner on hair condition. For example, if your scalp is oily and your ends are dry (which is a common problem), choose a shampoo that is best suited for an oily scalp and a conditioner that is best suited to hydrate your dry ends.

Oily Scalp Shampoo Advice

  • Avoid shampoos that are hydrating, moisturizing, smoothing, or good for curly hair. These shampoos tend to add too much moisture to your already oily scalp.
  • Look for labels that read volumizing, strengthening, or balancing. These products are less moisturizing and more effective at removing excess oil.
  • A daily clarifying shampoo can be a big help to super oily scalp conditions, but be careful that you’re not over drying your scalp when choosing to use a clarifying shampoo. Overdrying can actually stimulate more oil and sebum production.
  • Try a super clarifying treatment when your oily scalp is really out of control.
  • Be sure the shampoo you choose for your oily scalp is color safe.
  • Spend extra time working the shampoo into your scalp to break up the oil. Rinse very well. Follow these steps to ensure proper shampooing.
  • After shampooing, avoid working your conditioner into your scalp. Rather, concentrate on keeping conditioner on the mid-shaft and ends of your hair. Rinse well.

Dry Scalp Shampoo Advice
When your scalp is dry, itchy, or even flaky choosing the right shampoo can be the first defense in the uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing conditions that can occur. It’s important to choose a shampoo that doesn’t add to the issue when you have a dry scalp. These tips can help you choose a shampoo for your dry scalp:

  • Avoid strengthening, fortifying, and volumizing shampoos. These products can strip your scalp of necessary moisture.
  • For scalps that are only slightly dry with little to no itching and that do not flake, look for shampoo labels that promote moisture, hydration, smoothing, or curls (especially handy if you have curly hair). These products promote moisture and can be beneficial to your dry scalp.
  • If your scalp is very dry, itchy, and or flaky consider shampoos that are specifically formulated for dry scalp. Ingredients like menthol and tea tree can help moisturize your dry scalp.
  • Nioxin can be an excellent investment for moderate to severe dry scalp concerns.
  • Avoid shampoos that contain sulfates, which are very drying to the hair and scalp.
  • Even when your scalp is dry, it’s important to properly shampoo your hair for best results.

Color protecting shampoo

Hair coloring and highlighting come with a price tag, even if you apply natural hair dyes like henna then you must use a hair color protecting shampoo. These shampoos also help in hair rebounding and it must be used to protect your hair color from the UV rays of the sun. Do not forget to follow up with a conditioner and a hair serum from the same range.

Shampoo Choice Based on your Specific Hair Type

If you have got a normal or standard scalp which is neither too oily or dry or flaky etc, you have to look for a shampoo which will suit your hair type the most.

  • Normal Hair: If you have got normal hair, namely it has the appropriate balance of all the elements like dryness, oiliness, strength, length, etc you can just look for a normal shampoo. In fact, this is not going to be the easiest as you will have to look around and hunt for a bit to find the perfect shampoo for you which will go along fantastically with your particular hair. Opt for mild shampoos to not damage your hair and to keep them in a healthy state.
  • Oily Hair: You will have oily hair if your scalp is oily and produces a lot of sebum. Opt for shampoos which contain sulfate to cleanse the excess oils from your hair along with other dirt and impurities to cleanse them properly. Also, look for options which do not hold a long list of ingredients because those types can exacerbate the oiliness of your hair and scalp by accumulating even more sticky and stifling compounds on your hair.
  • Dry Hair: If you have got the opposite of the previous type, i.e. you have very dry hair, then you need to find a shampoo which will help hydrate your hair efficiently and effectively. Go for mild shampoos which are light in ingredients and chemicals to nourish your hair while protecting them.
  • Fine Hair: Now, if you have got thin fine hair and you want to thicken them up and add some volume, then you have to find a shampoo which can help you thicken your hair strands to add some heft and volume to your hair. These type of thickening shampoos contain what is called film formers which coat your hair to make them thicker and stronger. However, avoid shampoos which contain silicones in them as they can prove to be a little too heavy to be used on such fine hair.
  • Curly or Frizzy Hair: Curly hair are the hardest to manage and maintain. They need more upkeep than their straighter counterparts and that needs to be reflected in the shampoo that you choose. Go for shampoos which are specifically targeted at curly hair, like which are packed with proteins and provide hydration to hair. There is a new type of product which has entered the market called cleansing conditioners and these work great on curly hair. They help remove dirt and impurities while also providing ample amount of hydration to the hair and scalp.
  • Colored Hair: Now, this is not a natural difference, but if you have colored your hair you will need to opt for a specific type of shampoo which can help you protect the color of the hair while also nourishing and hydrating them well.
