If you have been searching for simple homemade drinks that can support a healthier weight-loss routine, you may have come across the viral “4-day cucumber, lemon, ginger and mint drink.” It is refreshing, inexpensive and extremely easy to prepare at home.
The original viral recipe became popular with claims that it could help people lose 4 kg and 16 cm from the waist in only four days. That result should not be treated as a realistic fat-loss promise. Losing several kilograms of body fat in four days is not considered a safe or typical goal. Health authorities generally recommend gradual weight loss of around 0.5–1 kg per week for most people.
What this drink can do is help you stay hydrated and provide a low-calorie alternative to sugary drinks. If your stomach feels puffy because of temporary bloating or water retention, you may also notice your waist feels a little less bloated after a few days of eating lighter meals and drinking enough water.
The popular version of this recipe combines cucumber, lemon, ginger and mint and is traditionally prepared overnight.
Ingredients
You will need:
- 8 glasses water, approximately 2 litres
- 1 medium cucumber, washed and thinly sliced
- 1 medium lemon, thinly sliced
- 1 tsp freshly grated ginger
- 12 fresh mint leaves
- 1 tsp dried mint, optional
Procedure
Take a large glass jug or container that can hold approximately two litres of water.
Add the sliced cucumber to the jug.
Next, add the lemon slices.
Add 1 tsp freshly grated ginger and gently crush the fresh mint leaves between your fingers before dropping them into the water. Crushing them slightly helps release their natural aroma.
If you have dried mint, add about 1 tsp as well.
Pour in approximately 8 glasses of drinking water and stir everything gently.
Cover the container and place it in the refrigerator overnight. The resting time allows the flavours of cucumber, mint, lemon and ginger to infuse into the water.
The next morning, give the drink another quick stir. You can strain it if you prefer clear infused water, or leave the ingredients inside the jug.
How to Use It
Have one glass in the morning and enjoy the remaining drink gradually during the day.
You can prepare and use this infused water for up to four days, making a fresh batch each day. The “four days” is simply a short routine—not because the ingredients suddenly become dangerous after four days.
Most importantly, do not replace your meals with this drink. Eat normal, nutritious meals containing vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes or other protein sources, and healthy fats.
For weight management, the drink is most useful when it replaces something higher in calories, such as sweetened soda, packaged juice or sugary tea. Actual fat loss ultimately requires your body to use more energy than you consume over time.
