UTI (Urinary Tract Infections) is an infection which you contract in any part of your urinary system – your kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. It is an infection caused by microbes. Most frequently caused by bacteria, UTIs can also be caused as a result of fungi and viruses. Here are a few ways to treat UTIs at home (however it is advised to consult your doctor first for diagnosis and confirmation as to what your infection is actually)
Drink Plenty of fluids
Drinking water helps to cleanse your urinary tract and thus drives away the bacteria and yeast. The more you urinate, the easier it is to eliminate the infection causing agents. It is a simple, yet very necessary step to help you out with the prevention of further infection.
Apply coconut oil
Apply coconut oil after washing your genitals with plain water. Coconut oil is to be applied only externally, it has anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties, thus it helps with reducing external bacteria and inflammation. It also helps soothe the dryness and irritation around the vaginal area. Moisturizing properties of coconut oil helps in prevention of micro-tears that can happen as a result of urinary tract infections and yeast growth in the vagina.
Increase Vitamin C intake ( Unsweetened Cranberry Juice )
Vitamin C is assumed to work by increasing the acidity of urine, thus killing bacteria that cause infections. A study of UTIs in pregnant women looking at the effect of taking 100mg of vitamin C, found that it had a protective effect on them and it cut the risk of contracting UTIs by more than half.
Drinking unsweetened cranberry juice is the most popularly used remedy for treating urinary tract infections. Some studies show that cranberry juice prevents UTIs by preventing the bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract.
Probiotic drinks and yogurt are life savers when it comes to treating UTIs effectively and organically. Intake of probiotic drinks on a regular basis, helps in preventing UTIs or any other yeast infections. Yogurt is recommended in treating UTIs internally too. You have to dispense yogurt into the vaginal opening, using a clean dropper (wash your hands first) and lie down for at least 15 minutes after doing so. But always consult your gynaecologist before treating yourself.
Practice Healthy Habits – such as wearing cotton underwear, using fragrance-free personal hygiene products.
Practice the healthy habit of wearing clean cotton underwear as it allows your vagina to breathe freely and avoids the build up of germs due to the moist environment the vagina creates. Moisture is a leading cause of recurring and persistent urinary tract infection.
Usage of vaginal washes may disturb your pH balance, thus it is always recommended to first consult your gynaecologist before using any vaginal wash. It is a known fact that personal hygiene washes can increase dryness and lead to more micro-tears if you already are suffering froma urinary tract infection. It is also important to avoid scented soaps for washing your vaginal area as it can cause irritation on skin.
Wash your vaginal area daily with plain water.
Raw garlic has variety of antimicrobial properties. Garlic has antifungal properties, particularly against candida albicans, which causes yeast infections. You can take crushed garlic with a teaspoon of honey, let it sit for some time allowing the allicin compound to form and then consume it. Women have reported that their UTIs completely cured just a few days after taking crushed garlic.
Clove oil has antimicrobial, antifungal and antiviral properties. It can be taken internally for two weeks at a stretch. It possesses anti-inflammatory properties and it’s used to relieve pain and promote healing.
