Effective Tips to Improve Eyesight

Eyesight is one of the wonders and blessings of God. Nutrition deficit, exposure to radiations from T.V, smartphones and computers and age-related diseases are the main reasons for the problems in eyesight. Three important solutions are put forth when it comes to the health of eyesight. Firstly eating food that is rich in vitamins A, C, and E, then eye exercises and lastly proper rest are advised. Given below are a few remedies and tips that will help you enhance your eyesight.


Right kind of food:

Apart from vitamins A, C, and E, minerals like copper and zinc, phytonutrients like zeaxanthin, lutein, and amino acids are essential to the eye health. All the above said nutrients are present in vegetables like carrots, spinach, garlic, pumpkins, and sweet potatoes. Cod, Salmons, and sardines contain the much needed DHA. Dried fruits and nuts and berries like blueberry, black currant contain anthocyanins needed for the retinal development. Whole grains contain the phytonutrients and zinc. Broccoli contains lutein that helps the eye from damage by powerful lights.

Proper Eye Exercise:

Every part of our body needs exercises for proper and extended functioning. Eye exercises are easier and can be done in a few minutes.

  • Tratak:

It is a yoga exercise. Tratak means a steady gaze at a particular point without blinking for a prolonged time till the eyes begin to water. This exercise helps to strengthen eye muscles, this, in turn, improves eye vision and relieve headaches due to eye problems. This exercise is called Bhrumadya tratak.

  1. Sit relaxed in a quiet and a dimly lit room. Use a yoga mat.
  2. You can sit in padmasana or Ardha padmasana or just sit with your legs folded.
  3. Keep your chin perpendicular to the ground.
  4. Now move your eyeballs diagonally across as if you are gazing at the center of your eyebrows.
  5. Maintain the gaze until tears start flowing.
  6. Now close your eyes.
  7. Rub your palms together to generate heat naturally.
  8. Place the palms over your closed eyes.

Repeat this two or three times. Later splash your eyes with cold water to improve blood circulation. This exercise can be done once in a day.

Caution: If you had undergone an eye surgery recently or experiencing any injuries please do not practice it.

To prevent and manage eye floaters follow this exercise:

  1. Sit in a chair with your back straight and with your feet firmly down on the floor.
  2. Keep your chin perpendicular to the ground.
  3. Now rotate your eyeballs in a clockwise direction first.
  4. Do this five times.
  5. Close your eyes and give them the rest.
  6. Now rotate your eyes in counter clockwise direction for another five times.
  7. Again close your eyes and rest them.
  8. Massage your eyes with your palms as said in the above exercise.
  9. Now with the knuckles of your thumb, massage the sides of the temples in a clockwise direction first and then in a counterclockwise direction for twenty times.
  10. Now repeat the action at the center of your eyebrows.
  11. Do this below the eyes at both sides of the bridge of the nose.
  12. Close your eyes and observe the calmness around.

Proper Rest:

Adequate sleep helps repair the body including the eyes. Allow yourself a complete eight hours of sound sleep.Look at greenery and gaze at them continuously for ten minutes when working in a computer or reading a book. Do this at the interval of every one hour. This would relieve the stress in your eyes. Additionally, place cucumber slices or used and chilled tea bags over your eyes for puffiness and cooling effect.

When these steps are followed regularly one can maintain and regain the health of the eyes.
