Hot summer days can make the skin feel sweaty, sticky, dull and dehydrated at the same time. Excessive sun exposure, heat, pollution and frequent cleansing may disturb the skin’s moisture balance, leaving your face looking tired even when it feels oily.
Instead of applying a heavy facial oil during summer, you can prepare a lightweight homemade glow serum using cooling and hydrating ingredients such as aloe vera, cucumber, rose water and green tea. This serum feels refreshing on the skin and provides hydration without leaving behind a thick or greasy layer.
The recipe also contains vegetable glycerin to attract moisture to the skin and a tiny amount of sweet almond oil for extra nourishment. Used regularly, it can help your complexion look softer, plumper and naturally radiant.
Because this DIY serum contains fresh, water-based ingredients and no cosmetic preservative, make it in very small batches and keep it refrigerated.
Ingredients Required
- 2 Tbsp fresh aloe vera gel – provides lightweight hydration and helps soothe skin that feels dry or uncomfortable after exposure to summer heat.
- 1 Tbsp fresh cucumber juice – naturally cooling and refreshing, making it particularly suitable for hot-weather skincare.
- 1 Tbsp pure rose water – refreshes the skin and gives the serum a light, soothing base.
- 1 Tbsp cooled green tea – provides antioxidant plant compounds and works well in summer skincare.
- ½ tsp vegetable glycerin – acts as a humectant and helps the skin retain moisture.
- ¼ tsp sweet almond oil – adds a small amount of nourishing emollient without making the serum excessively oily.
Procedure
Start by preparing a small quantity of green tea. Add a green tea bag to hot water, allow it to steep for a few minutes and then let it cool completely. You will need only 1 Tbsp for this recipe.
Next, grate a small piece of fresh cucumber and squeeze it through a clean muslin cloth or fine strainer to obtain 1 Tbsp cucumber juice.
Take 2 Tbsp aloe vera gel in a clean bowl and whisk it for approximately one minute until the texture becomes smooth.
Add 1 Tbsp cucumber juice and 1 Tbsp cooled green tea.
Mix in 1 Tbsp rose water.
Now add ½ tsp vegetable glycerin and ¼ tsp sweet almond oil.
Whisk everything thoroughly until you get a light serum-like consistency. Because the recipe contains both water and a small quantity of oil, the mixture may separate slightly during storage. This is normal.
Transfer the serum into a thoroughly cleaned, dry glass bottle and close it tightly.
Keep the bottle refrigerated at all times and make only enough for a couple of days. Without a proper broad-spectrum cosmetic preservative, homemade water-based products can become contaminated even when they still look or smell normal.
For the safest approach, prepare a fresh small batch every 2–3 days.
How to Use This Summer Glow Serum
Use the serum once daily, preferably after cleansing your face in the evening.
Wash your face with a mild cleanser and gently pat it dry.
Shake the serum well before each application.
Take approximately 3–4 drops or a small pea-sized amount and spread a thin layer over your face and neck.
Gently press the serum into your skin instead of rubbing aggressively.
Allow it to absorb for a minute or two. If your skin is dry, you can follow with a lightweight moisturizer.
During the daytime, always finish your skincare routine with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. Sunscreen is far more important for preventing sun-related pigmentation and premature skin aging than any DIY glow treatment.
You can also apply the refrigerated serum after coming indoors on particularly hot days for a pleasant cooling sensation.
Benefits of This DIY Summer Glow Serum
- Provides lightweight hydration: Aloe vera, glycerin, cucumber and rose water help replenish moisture without the heavy feel of an oil-based serum.
- Gives skin a fresh appearance: The chilled cucumber and aloe combination can make hot, tired-looking skin feel immediately refreshed.
- Helps skin look plumper: Humectants such as glycerin attract water to the outer layers of the skin, which can temporarily make fine dehydration lines appear softer.
- Supports a healthy-looking glow: Well-hydrated skin reflects light more evenly and naturally looks smoother and more radiant.
- Provides antioxidant support: Green tea contains polyphenols that are widely used in skincare because of their antioxidant properties.
- Soothes summer dryness: Aloe vera can be especially useful when heat, air conditioning or frequent face washing leaves the skin feeling tight.
- Doesn’t feel excessively greasy: Only a very small amount of almond oil is used, making this recipe more comfortable for summer than a heavy facial-oil blend.
- Helps soften the skin: Almond oil provides emollient fatty acids that can make dry areas feel smoother.
- Cooling when refrigerated: Unlike many thick creams and oils, this lightweight serum feels particularly refreshing when applied cold.
