Turmeric is a magic root that has been passed down generations & recommended for overall well-being since infinity. It is used in our traditional Indian food, in our new-age cosmetics & all around us. But sometimes, simple kitchen turmeric without modification can come handy while dealing with skin problems.
Turmeric is a root like ginger which is dried & powdered to obtain it in a powder form. You can try to use the root itself on acne spots if you can get it. Turmeric has anti-bacterial properties which fights acnes & targets the bacteria directly. Continual use of turmeric masks can help get rid of skin problems altogether.
Using turmeric alone might leave strong discolouration or stains on your face. To avoid this situation, you might want to use one of the following masks for a better result! Here are 8 others kitchen ingredients that you can combine with turmeric to make some fantastic masks!
Yogurt is a common kitchen ingredient which can work wonders for the body inside & out. It is loaded with good bacteria which act towards reviving the skin to basics with healing it simultaneously. It heals, soothens, smoothens & brightens the skin. When paired with turmeric, it makes a fantastic acne cure mask which heals & nourishes the target spots.
Churn the yogurt without any lumps, add a pinch of turmeric to it & make a paste. This mask can work as an overall face mask, not just for pimple spots. In case the yogurt/curd is a bit sour, it might cause some irritation depending on the skin type. Always do a patch test before applying on face. Also, there maybe some smell issues, hence it is recommended to use fresh yogurt.
- Besan/ Chickpea flour
This mask can be used not only for the face but as a body wash. Chickpea flour is known for its skin brightening properties. It gives promising results with continued use. Along with turmeric it gives the perfect home-made body scrub that you’ll ever need.
Make a paste of 5 parts of besan to one part of turmeric & apply to affected spots or the entire face as a mask. You can use plain water, luke warm milk or rose water, whichever you prefer to use.
The malai/fat that we get atop our milk after boiling it can be very useful for our body. You might reject it for your body from your diet but keep it aside for your face. Yes, you heard it right!
Take the malai & grind to form a thick paste. Be sure not to dilute it. Add a teaspoon of turmeric to the paste.
WARNING – Being highly fatty with large amount of turmeric, this mixture is a very strong paste & the number of times you will have to wash your face is directly proportional to the time you leave it on. Hence, it is advisable to apply this only on the necessary spots so that your entire face doesn’t get stained. In case you wish to use this for your entire face as a mask, reduce the amount of turmeric. You will still have to use face wash to get the fat out of your face.
This mask particularly helps in not only getting rid of pimples, but the fats also help in making your skin look plump & juicy.
- Neem leaves
Neem is known for its ant-bacterial properties & is a common ingredient in most facial cosmetic products. This mixture will directly act on the target spots & fasten up the healing.
Neem powder is available in the markets. You can also choose to make it by yourself at home. Use neem powder & turmeric in equal proportions. Use a diluting agent in case of powder; if you have neem paste, add turmeric directly & use the mixture on spots. If using as a mask, dilute it with water to make a thick paste.
- Essential oils
This is a secret recipe which most of you are going to absolutely love. This is a “only turmeric” recipe & since the concentration is high it will act faster. But with the speed comes the colouration of course.
For some of us who don’t exactly like the strong scents or kitchen products [turmeric included], this would serve apt. choose an essential oil of your liking & add drops of it to some turmeric, just enough to make a semi-solid paste. Use this paste on the pimple areas directly.
This is not a mask so don’t apply it on your entire face.

Honey is known to be a wonder food which doesn’t rot. It does the same to your skin as well. It helps it retain its youthful glow sans marks & pimples. The natural sugars help to lift up the skin & work from within to plump it up.
Make a honey-turmeric paste & apply as a mask. If you want to use it regularly, you might add a few drops of lemon juice as well. Lemon is a natural bleach & works towards lightening the skin tone, giving you a fairer & brighter skin.
You can source this powder from your nearest grocery. Sandalwood has inherent cooling properties which reduces the irritation & redness from the painful pimples & calms it down. Turmeric will fight the bacteria causing the pimple & you can eventually get rid of it naturally.
Sandalwood is available which you will need to rub & make a paste of using water; or else you could you the powder available. Mix the two powders – 3 parts sandalwood to 1 part turmeric & dilute it with water, rose water or milk. Form a thick paste & apply it as a mask.
You can add as much sandalwood powder as you want for it will only enhance the cooling.
- Aloe vera
Aloe vera is also, known for its amazing properties of cooling & conditioning, skin & hair & now can work as a fantastic mask as well. It is recommended to use fresh gel; add some turmeric & grind it into a paste. This might not be a very thick paste, for it isn’t an area specific treatment, this will be a face mask. If you wish to make a thicker paste, refrain from adding more turmeric. Instead, add any of powders from the above list – besan, neem or sandalwood.
