These hairstyles need less time and are very easy to do. They give relief to your neck region. Combining the braids and buns, there are many trendy braided bun hairstyles.

I have also explained hairstyles suitable for short, medium and long length hair. You can give yourself a trendy look by trying these hairstyles at home.

General Instruction

  • Always comb your hair with a fine-toothed comb before doing braids.
  • Remove all the tangles in your hair.
  • Apply hair serum or lotion before starting to do any hairstyles. This can make your hairstyle proper.
  • Whenever you braid, hold your hair tightly. Not holding it tight can spoil your braid.
  • Use the bobby pins according to the color of your hair. Always prefer small pins for fixing your hair.
  • Be careful while pulling out the braided portions for increasing the fluffiness. Pull it gently or it will damage the entire hairstyle.
  • While rolling your hair, always prefer to roll it in the backward direction. Rolling it forward can make the ends to come in between. This can spoil the overall look.
  • Make sure that all the ends of your hair are tucked in properly.
  • Also, make sure that the bun is fixed firmly in a proper position.
  • You can use a hair spray after braiding the hair. This can make your hair get fixed properly.

  1. Hi, I am 29 years old and I am getting married on the coming 12th of May. I stay in Arizona and the weather here is extreme hot. Now, I cannot compromise on the wedding gown as it is traditional but I sure can alter the hairstyle to save myself from the heat. Can you suggest me one that would look the best with an ivory colored sleek gown??

  2. My hair breaks a lot whenever I tie them in a braid. I love this hairstyle because it is perfect for summers but I cannot keep losing my hair for it. Can you suggest me something for it?

  3. I want to get the box braid hair. Is there a specific hair texture or hair colour that it suits the best. Please help.

  4. I am always in a fight with my own self weather or not I should give the braid and updo hair style to my 5 year old. She look very adorable with it but I don’t want her to look any where older than 5. Plus I also don’t want her hair and scalp to be under a lot of pressure. The problem is that she has fallen in love with this hairstyle and I want her to have it with minimum damage. Is there an alternative.

  5. I have hair that barely reached my shoulders but I want them up on my head instead of rubbing my shoulders. How do I achieve this? They are also in layers so it becomes even more difficult to pin it down in a bun. Are there any tips?

  6. I have the perfect hair length that can help with a braid as well as the updo however, my hair is silky soft and it does not create the volume and the drama that it needs for a good braid updo. Any tips on that?

  7. Hi guys, it’s a little weird being on this page as I think I am the one amongst the only few guys on this page. I guess. Anyways, so the prom session has started in my college and we have been picking out outfits for my girlfriend. While everything else is set, she wants to get a braided updo on her hair. She has frizzy hair and is caramel in color. Can someone please help me as my suggestion will make her very happy. You can also choose one from the above mentioned hair style. Thank you in advance.

  8. I don’t think the breakage is related anywhere to the hairstyle until and unless you are tying them very very tight. I think the problem lies in your hair products and other external factors.

  9. Can somebody suggest me some best volumanising products as I have long hair which can be used to experiment a lot in terms of buns and braid but they are straight and with no texture. Please suggest 4-5 products from different price range.

  10. Is there a natural way to add texture to the hair? My hair refuse to stay in place and I don’t want to use gel or setting spray on them.

  11. If you want an instant change from silky smooth to volumanised, then I would suggest go for back combing the hair. Also a lot of serums and mousse comes that helps in adding texture to the hair instantly but it won’t be natural.

  12. Here are few of the tips that you can use to add texture to your hair: However, they will need constant usage and is not a one time show. It will take time but the results will be permanent.
    1. Keep your scalp away and free from conditioner.
    2. An instant way to add volume is using blow dry. Try using the medium heat setting.
    3. Crunch your hair instead of massaging them when you hair wash.
    4. Rough drying is also one of the ways to add volume. Brush with your hair upside down. Move it a lot from side to side.
You can use all these tips and you will see a drastic change in the quality of your hair.

  13. They all seem very promising. Will the crunching and rough drying damage the hair a little or is it absolutely safe?

  14. I totally agree with @barkha. To explain it to you a little in detail, if you are looking for a lot of drama then I suggest opt for the fishtail side bun or the triple bun braid. They are intricate and would add a lot of character to your look. If you are looking for something subtle then you should blindly pick the double lace braid. It entirely depends on the mood you want to create. If you are feeling bold and want a boho-like look, then go straight to the fishtail braid bun.

  15. It entirely depends on the products that you are using. Face and Hair are the only two things which you shouldn’t treat with cheap products. It comes biting back. Use expensive products that are away from chemicals as much as possible. Considering you might need curls and waves, I suggest you use a heat protect and spray it onto your hair from a distant. This will save the hair a little from the damage.

  16. Hair spray come with a lot of chemicals in it as it pretty much have to stiffen the hair and make it stay. Using it sometimes for events is okay. But if you start using it every day, it can lead to hair fall and weaker hair.

  17. It will surely damage your hair. Hair sprays have a lot of chemical otherwise it won’t make the hair stay.

  18. Not really sure where you stay but here is the best volumanising shampoo, conditioner and serum. If you don’t get it in your country or city then try searching for it online. They are quite famous and you will be able to track them down.
    SHAMPOO:
    1. Kerastase Resistance Bain Volumifique Thickening Shampoo
    2. Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Shampoo
    3. Stemm High Amino Shampoo

    CONDITIONER:
    1. OGX Thick And Full Biotin & Collagen Conditioner.
    2. Nexxus Leave-In Conditioning Crème.
    3. Aveda Invati Thickening Conditioner.

    SERUMS:
    1. Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray.
    2. Herbal Essences Body Envy Volumizing Mousse.
    3. Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray
    These should work.

  19. I am a constant user of the Moroccan oil dry textured Spray and I don’t think here is any hair spray as fab as this. It works brilliantly even for dry hair. It nourishes while helping the hair in getting that extra volume.

  20. There are a lot of ingredients that you can use before braiding you hair to add volume to it. The easiest is back combing the hair. Drying it rough adds a texture to the hair which makes making buns and braids easy.

  21. Totally depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for something simple yet elegant then the Lace braided bun is very easy yet will manage to look great. If you are the fun quirky kind, then your best bet would be Double dutch with bun. It also depends on what you want to portray your personality as. If you want to cut down a few age then with the dutch, even the upside down French would look great. All the best.

  22. What is trending and what would suit your hair type and occasion is two completely different factors to be considered before braiding your hair. Decide what you want and then go for it.

  23. Don’t know about natural, but dry shampoo’s are a great way to add texture to the hair. If you’re someone who is looking for a way to add texture that surely means your hair is silky straight. Condition your hair real nice and then use the dry shampoo to get texture without losing moisture,

  24. I am an avid reader about fashion and beauty and I came across these tips about buns which might be of great help to your guys. Follow these and make your bun look flawless.

    1. Rolling you bun up will give it a messy look that would look very natural.
    2. If you have hair that keeps falling and refuses to stay in a bun then secure it by twisting and fixing it, right on top of the crown. This gives it support.
    3. Put your hair in a ponytail and then pull the tail end through the band.
    4. If you have long hair, then braid it till the end and then roll it upwards. Secure it with a pin and it will give your a very intricate look where you have actually given zero efforts.
    5. If your hair keep falling off the bun then start with creating two ponytails and then twisting them together. This gives it much more support and it will stay in tact.
    6. Always use a hair donut or a sock if you have very less volume.

I hope these help you big time. If you guys try it out, please send me pictures.

  25. Not really. A box braid hair looks great on all hair kinds. If you have longer hair then that will act as a cherry on the cake.

  26. I absolutely love how this article is curated. I am surely going to give few of them a try the next time I am out with my friends partying or attending a brunch. Thank you so much.

  27. Is there a specific comb or tool that I can use which would make the braid and bun making process easier? If yes, can someone please add a link or its name somewhere as reply on my comment. Thank you in advance.

  28. Hi Akira, I don’t know their exact name but I have seen a couple of combs based on the time of braid that you would like on amazon and other global shopping platforms. You can similarly search for bun tools as well however, it will mostly be the hair donuts and the bun maker. Do give it a try though, there is a lot online.

  29. I personally love it when someone takes down the effort to research and list down things that would be helpful to others. Kudos Aubrey. 🙂

  30. I am 27 years old and I have very thin hair. They are also very oily and becomes skimpy within no time. I have been a passionate user of Aveda Pure shampoo and I don’t think there is anything that can beat this shampoo. You cannot talk about volumanising and not talk about this shampoo. I also used he Moroccon Oil Dry textures spray earlier but as soon as I started using the shampoo, I don’t need anything else to add natural volume to my hair. It has made my hair dense and it also makes them look very healthy.

  31. As instructed, I used serum on my hair before making the dutch braid bun, but that took away the volume from the hair and looked very okay-ish instead of looking rad how it looks otherwise. Is there a reason the serum is used? Does it protect the hair or something? Please help.

  32. I am not sure why serum is mentioned here but it must be to protect the hair from going brittle due to the styling tools. If your serum is taking away the volume, I suggest using a volumanising spray or serum. And if it still remains the same, then use the serum and after it settle on the hair and scalp, use a dry shampoo. This will sure shot give volume to your hair. The serum will protect the layer of your hair as well.

  33. It is my best friends wedding on the 15th of May and the theme of the wedding is boho. I have nailed the perfect dress and accessories but I am looking out for a great hairstyle that would look perfect with the dress as well as go with the theme. My dress is a flowy ash blue beachy kind of dress. I am wearing a flower tiara and some chunky jewelery. Please suggest me some hair styles with buns and braids for a boho look. Thank you in advance.
P.s It is okay if its complicated. I can get it done from a hair dresser.

  34. First of all, a heart felt congratulation to your friend on getting married. Now coming to the question, you can go on pinterest and look for Boho braided updo. This will give you enough results to seek inspiration from or picking one and getting it done exactly as is.

  35. There is a heavy chance that your hair dresser is already aware about tones of hair styles that would go with the boho theme but if not, the Internet is filled with the options. From Youtube, Pinterest to Instagram. Pick whichever bet suit your dress and the whole look and you will surely look great. All the best.

  36. Hi Sophie, if you don’t want to search and you are already on this page reading the article, then the double laced braided updo will look stunning with the dress that you just described. It is perfect even for that tiara of yours and the intricate braid and bun will look beautiful. Plus it justifies the theme as well.

  37. It totally depends on the serum that you used. If it was a basic serum then it is better that you don’t use it. The ideal serum would first be something that protect the hair from heat. To achieve a lot of these hairstyle your might need to curl or straighten to your hair to add a touch of extra to the look. For that the tool required needs to be hot and the heat can damage the hair. So use that. And if it still makes your hair fall flat then mix it with a volumanising spray

  38. I love how celebrities hair look when they are in a bun. I have tried it so many times but the messy does not look messy enough and a neat braided bun is always either falling or very unattractive to go out with. What are some of the tips that will help me rock a braided bun easily.

  39. You can go to a store nearby that sells cosmetics and hair color and ask them for supplies related to bun making and braid making. They have all the equipment and they can also guide you based on your hair type if you need a specific serum or spray to keep the kind of bun you are dreaming of, in place. Show them the pictures and they will help you with everything. All the best.
