What Is Eclipse?

Eclipse, in general, is the shadowing of one heavenly body with another. It can be moon shadowing the earth or sun shading the earth. There are two types of eclipses. Solar and lunar. When the earth moves in between the sun and the moon, blocking the light from the moon. Lunar can happen only on a full moon and can be seen directly from the earth.

Solar lunar, on the other hand, occurs when the moon comes in between the sun and the earth while orbiting. Visibility of a solar eclipse is really low and it lasts for only a few minutes.

While looking directly or being out during a lunar is considered bad for the vibe as well as the health, there is a lot that is done and said around pregnancy and eclipse. While most of it can be waved off as mere myths, there is a precaution that comes with scientific reasoning and hence makes sense, unlike others.

eclipse and pregnancy

Effects Of Eclipse On Pregnant Women

While there a lot of myths that revolve around eclipse and pregnancy, there are the certain proven and practical effect that eclipse can cause on a pregnant woman. There can create an emotional imbalance cause hormonal issues in pregnant women. This can affect the child as well.

Psychological Effects

There is a lot that is said and done around eclipse by a pregnant woman however the one thing that is avoided and must be taken care of firstly is the psychological effect of this. Constantly thinking about the effects a lunar can cause to you if you are pregnant will do nothing but stress you out. Pregnancy is a time when hormones are all over the place and thinking negative or stressing over something is very easy to do. It is first and foremost important to stay as calm as possible and rest as much as you can during your pregnancy. Worrying about eclipse and its effect will just worsen the situation causing emotional imbalance.

Myth Around Eclipse And Pregnancy

Most of the things that people say around eclipse are mostly a myth and superstition. While you should always be careful during an eclipse, considering you will be looking at the sun directly, there are certain myths that need breaking.

Especially most of the things that are said around pregnancy and eclipse are mostly myths. Learn them so that the next time you see someone passing it on, you can break the bubble of superstition there.

Using Knife Can Cause Cleft Lip In The Newborn

A woman must rest as much as possible during her pregnancy. Considering, even to date, most women spend their time in the kitchen. Pregnancy requires maximum rest for the child and the mother to be in perfect condition. However, the whole “knife can cause cleft lip in the newborn” is a myth. It does not have any scientific reasoning whatsoever. There also stands a women’s statement, where looking at an eclipse caused this condition in her newborn while no reports detected it. However, this seems nothing more than a coincidence.

Origin of the myth
There was a heavy chance of an expecting mother to hurt herself in the kitchen back then when the world was deprived of electricity. Daily chores of the house were the only work of women back then and hence this being a precaution made sense. However, for today’s time, it is a hardcore myth.

Going Out During An Eclipse

This is a myth that even if wanted to try is very difficult in today’s time. Stopping all chores just because of a shadow cast makes little sense. Going out in the open during a solar or lunar eclipse will absolutely have no harm whatsoever. However, looking directly at the sun can cause negative effects to the eyes. But then again, this is true with eclipse or without it as well. Looking directly at the sun can cause issues in the retina and this can happen to anyone, not just someone who is pregnant.

Origin of the myth:
This myth was created back when electricity did not exist and a pregnant women’s going out with proper light could cause her to trip leading to issues with the child. However today, with an ample amount of resources, this precaution has evidently turned into a myth.

Skipping Eating And Drinking During Eclipse

This in no way is healthy for the body and especially not for someone who is expecting. The body should be provided with an abundance of food and hydration during pregnancy as the food consumed is for two beings. Not eating can cause drowsiness, weakness and even fainting sensations that can worsen the situation further. During eclipse be it lunar or solar, microbes tend to multiply causing the food to go bad faster than usual. It is also perceived that the protective benefits of sunlight are also lost during this time. Hence the myth around not eating and drinking.

Origin of the myth

While this makes absolute sense both scientifically and theoretically, it again was appropriate for the times that were deprived of invention like refrigerators. Storing things in it protects it from all these problems and hence eating or drinking during an eclipse is no problem whatsoever.

Belly Touch Will Leave A Birth Mark On The New Born

There is a huge myth that touching your belly on an eclipse will leave the newborn with a birthmark. A birthmark just like the complexion or the colour of your eyes has no control whatsoever of any factor. It is merely caused due to genes, skin-related conditions, or pigmentation. In fact, it is a proven fact that touching the belly gives an emotional warmth from the outside and hence the baby kicks to get attention from the mother. So be it eclipse or no eclipse touch your belly when your unborn demands attention.

Bathing After Eclipse Is A Must

Bathing in general at the end of the day is great for relieving leg swelling or tiredness that women and especially pregnant women grow to the weight that she carries. There is no connection of bathing with eclipse. However, it is also said that taking a shower takes away all the negative energy that the eclipse leaves. Chanting few mantras or sitting in a calm and quiet place would also do just that. This is helpful otherwise but the reasoning for it sure makes it a myth.

Staying Away From Sharp Objects

This pretty much has the same explanation that the knife myth has. A pregnant woman requires maximum rest and doing anything with any sharp object would mean work which she surely should be away from. This also comes from the belief that if a pregnant woman cuts or hurts herself, the bleeding will last longer and it will also take a long time to heal. However, this is also not supported by any scientific reasoning. Hence, it is a myth which sounds like a full proof precaution for days when electricity did not exist but for today’s time, it is a myth.

Pregnant Women Shouldn’t Sleep During An Eclipse

A pregnant woman must get as much sleep as humanly possible without making one too groggy. Depriving oneself with sleep due to eclipse cannot come with any scientific reasoning what so ever. Resting and relaxing as much as possible is the key to stay away from any sort of cranky behaviour that can trouble the hormones during pregnancy. So rest as much as you want.

Throwing Away Old Food

This is also due to the effects of the eclipse on food. It can cause microbes to form faster on perishables and hence it is not advised to keep anything old cooked in the house during an eclipse. However, this is not valid now as we have refrigerators to store food and gas to reheat, options that were not available back then when this myth was created in the first place.

Cause For Deformity In The New Born

Any sort of deformity in a child is caused due to the genes diet or vitamin deficiency, or any pre-existing health issues of the mother. There is no relation of an eclipse causing problems for the newborn as it can not even affect the mother as far as she is not looking at the solar eclipse directly from her eyes. While there are certain cases where exposing to eclipse did cause deformity to their newborns however, there are no proven reports that say that the eclipse was the reason.

Don’t wear metal

It is said to not wear metal like necklace, clips, pins or metal earings during the times of an eclipse by a pregnant woman. This clearly does not have any proven reasoning. On the contrary, there also is a myth that asks a women to wear red underwear with a safety pin.

Precaution For Pregnant Women During Eclipse

  • Do not go outdoors or gaze at the sun directly.
  • Avoid sleeping during an eclipse. Try to get ‘darbha grass’ and sit on the ‘darbha grass’ after spreading it on the floor.
  • Do not use sharp objects like pins, knives, or needles during an eclipse.
  • Do not eat, drink, or cook during the eclipse.
  • Chant ‘Maha Mrutyunjaya Mantra’ or ‘Santana Gopala Mantra’ during the eclipse period.
  • It is advised to take a bath after the eclipse ends.

Now that you are aware of the myths that people throw around regarding eclipse and pregnancy, stay clear of it and also educate people around you for the same. Spreading these myths not only creates an added problem but also makes life a little harder. While following a few of them just for the sake of the elderly will do no harm, stay away from myths like not eating or touching your belly. They will do nothing but disturb you emotionally, causing an emotional imbalance that will affect you as well as stress out the baby.

It is important to understand that these myths were created when times and situation called for it, however now when we are equipped with technologically advanced products that make the life easy, there is no point going back and troubling oneself for nothing. Eating healthy and taking an abundance of rest is all that you need to do during your pregnancy to have a newborn that is fit and healthy.

Tips For A Pregnant Women During Eclipse

There are certain tips that not just pregnant but everyone must follow during an eclipse to avoid any sort of health hazards. Follow them cause prevention has always been better than cure.

Don’t Look Directly At The Sun

  • Sun’s radiation can be harmful when looked at directly. You must take proper precautions if you are planning to watch it.
  • Watching the eclipse with the naked eye can actually affect the exposure that your retina will have to the intense visible light of the sun.
  • It can even result in retinal burns due to the damage done to the light-sensitive cone cells and rod.
  • So whether you are pregnant or not, you should avoid staring at the sun directly during an eclipse as it can damage your eyes and develop what is known as ‘eclipse blindness’.

Do Not Eat, Drink Or Cook During An Eclipse

  • It is a known fact that the sun rays are very important and are the reason for our survival.
  • Without these rays, the earth might be just another place with lots of harmful microbes and germs. This is what happens during eclipses.
  • Due to the sun being blocked, its rays to get blocked.
  • As a result, there is a sudden drop in temperature.
  • This temperature drop and missing sun rays cause microbes, bacteria and harmful germs to rise.
  • This is said to affect food items and almost every perishable item for that matter.
  • Hence it is advised to avoid eating, drinking or even cooking during an eclipse.
  • The sun rays kill all the harmful bacteria and germs, which otherwise might prove dangerous for humans.

  1. Can both lunar and solar eclipse have bad impact on a pregnant women or it is just one of them?

  2. I have heard a lot of stories about how when a woman actually saw the lunar, her baby came out with either a permanent scar of some sort or a disease in itself. Does it actually have anything to do with it or was it mere co incidence?

  3. I honestly don’t believe in all these things but I have read some really disturbing things and considering I am trying to get pregnant, I would be really thankful if someone has experienced anything around it. Please let me know. It is my first child and I want to protect him/her to my utmost capacity.

  4. My elders are suggesting me to not eat during the eclipse. I am 5 months pregnant and I think from a practical perspective and I am not sure if not eating is a solution. However, the reasoning behind it seems very practical when I read it in this article. I am confused. I just want the best for my child. Can someone please suggest what should I do.

  5. Is it really harmful to look at the eclipse during my pregnancy. I have this telescope which I invested in because I am very curious about the astronomy. The celestials, space, and the physical universe as a whole interests me a lot. I just wanted to know if it is really as bad as people say it will be or is it just hyped.

  6. I am a designer and 4 months pregnant too. I cannot really stay away from needles as that is how I earn. I get a lot of orders and I cannot stop even for a single hour. Is it really that bad to use a needle during pregnancy or is it just a huge myth.

  7. How does chanting mantra’s help during an eclipse. I have always heard it helps and is great when you are pregnant. How does it help and what is the reason behind it. I am someone who likes seeing something to believe it, more of a practical person. I couldn’t really find the reason as to why this helps?

  8. Is there a scientific reason why women should not leave the house during eclipse when they are pregnant.

  9. I have heard there is an Indian custom where woman are not allowed to eat anything during their pregnancy. Is there a reason why this exist or is it just a myth.

  10. With all the pregnancy and food related questions I really want to know what is an ideal diet during pregnancy.

  11. I am pregnant and I have been reading a lot of stuff around it. I came across many things that seem just like a myth. I am super confused now with so much content online. Why do some people say that you should not eat or sleep during an eclipse? Some say that food becomes poisonous and pregnant women shouldn’t go outside during that time. There’s no scientific reason behind, is there? Or is it actually true.

  12. @PoppyWhite Hi. Firstly congratulations if you are pregnant and all the best if you are trying to conceive. Now coming to your question, there are absolutely no scientific reasons behind these baseless beliefs. I am someone who truly believes in practicality over what people say and I don’t think there is much information supporting these claims. I have a feeling that people still follow them because of misconceptions, fears, irrational thinking, lack of proper education and many such things. I was pregnant with my first child and I ate and watched the eclipse through protected sunglasses as well. Nothing bad ever happened to me. My sister did the same thing too and nothing happened to her as well. I am living proof to show that eclipses are just natural phenomena and they need not be feared in any way. Go ahead and enjoy your food and sleep during eclipses.

  13. @PoppyWhite I am not sure if eating or sleeping gets effected during eclipse. I have never heard of the things you mentioned on the comment though. However, as far as I know, the worst that can happen during an eclipse to a pregnant women or to anyone is when they look at it directly from the naked eyes without any protection. Even a quick glance or looking at it for a couple of seconds can hurt your eyes permanently.

  14. @AvaThompson Pregnancy is a very sensitive time and it is important to take care of what you eat. While almost everyone will tell you what to eat, here is a list of things that you should stay away from when you are pregnant.

    1. High-Mercury Fish
    2. Raw Fish
    3. Processed Meat
    4. Raw eggs
    5. Caffeine
    6. Raw sprouts
    7. Unpasteurized Milk
    8. Alcohol
    9. Processed Junk food
    10. Cheese

Try avoiding these products as much as possible so that you keep your system working just fine. This way you will not even harm your baby in any way and control and manage your health as well.

  15. How does the eclipse cause a disturbance to the hormones? Is it true or just like most other things, it is a myth as well.

  16. Well, I saw a lot of my fellow clan asking here how eating can effect pregnancy. Well, It can. It i one amongst those things that are true and implied today as well. It is very possible that eating something during the times of eclipse can disturb your system entirely. During eclipse be it lunar or solar, microbes tend to multiply causing the food to go bad faster than usual. However, chances of this happening has gone down way to much considering the advanced refrigerators that are now coming with special microbes protective layer that protect the food stored in the refrigerator to be away from any damage.

  17. @IsabellaGreen But isn’t that a myth now? I think this was invented at a time when refrigerators didn’t exist and people used to store food outside in a cool place. It was more easy for microbes to attack the food back then than now. So I think now, it is a much safer time with advanced technology in and I think that someone who is pregnant shouldn’t worry much about not eating and starving during the eclipse.

  18. Totally. I think it is just a myth now. There is nothing to worry about. With refrigerators in, I think there is no problem anymore and there is absolutely nothing to worry about.

  19. It is advisable to avoid performing any important work or deal for a pregnant woman not because of the eclipse but because it can tire her up very quickly. It is also advised to take a shower after, not because of the eclipse again but because it is known to leave an abundance amount of negative energy after the eclipse. It is important to rinse the body away from those energies but it is in no way related to the eclipse what so ever.

  20. @AmySmith Eclipse cannot directly have any impact on a pregnant woman but it is known to leave a negative energy around. It just works like most funerals do where you come back and take a shower to rinse off all the negativity. In this case you chant mantras. The vibrations that mantras have fills to body with a positive vibe by replacing the negative ones. This is a core reason why a lot of Hindu perform the Om mantra first thing in the morning to start afresh. The mantras are in no way a protection against the eclipse affect but it is in fact just a way to cleanse the body and can be performed even if it is not an eclipse.

  21. I like the article. The fact I love the most about it is how it does not just talk about the myths but also reveal the origins of it and how they are applicable in today’s tine. I feel it is very important for platforms like these to use their power and provide information about topics like these which are very complex and covered with a layer of superstition. I don’t think there is any reason why any one should live a life by being scared of these myths. What is practical must be accepted and what is not must be not given any importance to. It won’t do any harm and in fact ends up adding additional amount of stress which can genuinely harm the health.

  22. There is absolutely no reason why anyone should be worried about an eclipse. To put it in the most simplest way, it is just the moon passing through the earth’s shadow. It looks great but look it through a protective layer as looking at it directly can cause harmful effects to the eye.

  23. Hi folks, I am 28 year old woman and I am 7 months pregnant so you can imagine an almost full grown belly now. I have been told by my elders like my granny and mother to not step out of the house. Now, I get super cranky when I don’t do so. I need to take my walks and they are clashing with the eclipse time window. They are also suggesting me to not eat and sleep when that happens. Now, all of it is making me cranky without my will and might be disturbing my hormones as well. does all this have any significance or are these only myths? Is there a proof or something about it which would help make my elders understand this too?

  24. @JadeJohnson These are all a total myth. Nothing actually matters in todays world. It was all valid long back when invention was far away but not in today’s world. You shouldn’t get swayed away by them and starve yourself. Eat whatever you wish like and sleep only if you want to rest, not otherwise. You can try explaining all of this to your elders and if you actually feel it will agitate them then you can just go with it. After all it is a matter of only a few hours.

  25. @JadeJohnson, I think @sophie is absolutely right. You can either try to explain them about all this or just follow it as it is a matter of fact only for a couple of hours to avoid the whole drama around it. I would suggest don’t starve yourself but you can always follow the rest.

  26. Are these myths followed everywhere or is it just in my country? I don’t believe on them but I am genuinely interested to know if it is in some other part of the world as well.

  27. @MiaAnderson It is very important to get the base clear before understanding the myths around it. It is nice of you to ask this so that it clears for everyone else as well. A solar eclipse happens when the moon gets between the Earth and the sun, and the moon casts its shadow over Earth. A solar eclipse can only take place at the phase of the new moon. On the other hand, a lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly behind the earth and into its shadow. This can occur only when the sun, the earth, and moon are closely aligned with earth between the other two.

  28. I love how this article is crisp and covers everything about eclipse and pregnancy and the myths that surround it. Love it. Thank you so much glowpink. And by the way, anyone who has been following this myth because they think it is actually going to make any difference or harm to their new born should know that it is just a myth and nothing else.

  29. Is the effects of lunar and solar eclipse different on pregnancy? Or does all the symptoms and myths remains the same?

  30. I am a huge non believer of these superstitious things and I have been explaining a lot of my folks about how it is so toxic to live a life being scared of things that are not even true. I have also heard a lot of people speak zillion varied things about eclipse and pregnancy too. I didn’t believe on them and no one pushed me about it at all. But the trouble started when I was pregnant 5 years later and it was clashing with the one of a very one of a kind eclipse. I wanted to be as far away as possible from the myths but they found their way towards me. When your elders come down with these myths and force them upon you, you honestly don’t have much to do. You have to accept them. But I wanted to give it a try and I tried to explain it to my elders. Us living at a different house helped me a lot as there was no one to actually check if I was following what I was asked to. I listened to my gut and went ahead to not following them. I went out a lot, I ate during that period and considering we live alone, me and my husband, I also cooked using the knife and hot stuff thinking nothing will happen. I went into labor and delivered my kid and I was shocked to see him with a cleft lip. I was embarrassed when I was asked about it by my in laws and I had no answer. Is this possible? Can this actually happen? I am so scared I don’t know why? I am just worried for my kid. Will he also have any other internal cases like these? For someone who believed in reality and this happens in reality, I honestly don’t know what to do. Someone please send suggestions.

  31. @RubyEllis I am shocked to know that something like this legit happened. I mean I knew it to be a very big myth but I never knew it could actually make things worse. I am sure it must have been a coincidence of some sort. The wise thing to do now would be to get your baby boy checked thoroughly by a doctor just to see if there is any problem. Also, did the lip cleft show in the ultra sound? I have heard that a baby can be detected by problems through the ultra sound itself. All the best in whatever happens.

  32. @HazelJackson I did get ultra sounds done and nothing showed up there. And yes I am waiting for my kid to reach an age where he can be put in the treatments stage where we can detect if there are any further problems. Thank you so much for your wishes.

  33. I have heard a lot of people say that one should not eat or sleep during an eclipse? Some say that food becomes poisonous and pregnant women shouldn’t go outside during that time. There’s no scientific reason behind all of them, is there?
