  1. What is the ideal times I should wash my hair to avoid excess products for my hair but to also avoid dandruff. My hair is oily and the more I wash my hair, the more oilier it becomes. I don’t know what am I doing wrong. Someone please help me with this.

  2. I have this severe problem where my dandruff keeps coming and going. I am finding it really difficult to manage a scalp like this. Kindly help.

  3. Can using essential oil for my hair permanently treat the problem or is it just a temp solution?

  4. @EvelynWihte Absolutely. Your hormones can have a drastic impact on everything from your skin, hair to even scalp. There is a reason why a lot of people experience their first dandruff hit during their puberty as the hormones are in the air causing drastic changes to the body.

  5. Is there a way to stop dandruff from the very first application of essential oil or will it need multiple usage to see visible changes?

  6. I have been having a lot of hormone related issues lately and I wanted to know if dandruff has anything to do with PCOS or PCOD?

  7. @MichaelThomas While it is not a proven fact, but dandruff can exist because of hormone related issues. The disturbance in the hormones can cause drastic issues for scalp skin as well as hair. It can lead to acne and blemishes and dandruff as well.

  8. @BarkhaDesai You should ideally wash your hair only twice in a week as that is enough to rinse of the dandruff and impurities. For some people it goes up to 3 times in a week but that totally depends on hair and scalp time. If someone has extremely oily scalp, they will need much quicker washes than normals scalp. When you wash your hair excessively it can also attract dandruff cause shampoos tend to suck up natural oil that is required by the scalp and when that happens the sebaceous gland produce excess sebum which can cause dandruff.

  9. @BarkhaDesai It totally varies person to person. Some need it thrice in a week wherein for some hair type twice is also enough. And then there are people who are blessed with hair and scalp that stays healthy with a single wash. I would suggest wash them when they get extremely oily. This way you would not cause excess dryness to your scalp.

  10. Is oiling good for dandruff? I mean I have heard that excess oil can also be a cause of dandruff.

  11. @Miaanderson If you want to permanently get rid of them then you will have to use them for a prolonged period of time. Even surgeries and treatments related to scalp or skin needs sitting to finally show desired effects. If you are using something natural, there is no way you will get desired results anytime before at least a month. Again this would vary according to different scalps, the climatic conditions, lifestyle etc.

  12. Hi, I am 21 years old and I have lately been having a lot of dandruff issues. I suggested it to a specialist and he gave me some medicine but there was no change. I followed the whole course. I thought of giving nature a chance to cure my problem cause I had heard that if you use natural ingredients or products for a prolonged period of time, it can help you get rid of dandruff. I was researching about it and I tried on some mask as well. While I was waiting for it to dry, I started looking through oiling ways which would solve my problem of dandruff. That is when I came across this article and firstly I was shocked cause I didn’t know much about essential oil and learning how great it is for the scalp, I dig a little deeper to find out its importance for both scalp as well as hair. I used the peppermint essential oil cause I absolutely love its fragrance. It has been the 3rd week since I have started using the recipe to cure my dandruff and it really has reduced to a good 60%. I think it will take yet another 2-3 weeks to completely fade off my scalp however no regrets. Please give it a try.

  13. @LillianLopez can you please specifically tell me which peppermint recipe did you use? Also did it have any adverse effect on the over all quality of your hair? As in did it make it rough, dry or brittle? Thank you in advance.

  14. @Hanaflores Apologies for not mentioning it in the review. I was excited to drop one cause the results turned me really happy. To answer your question, I used the peppermint and olive oil treatment for two simple reason.

    1. It is very simple and require minimum effort to prepare and use which is perfect for me as I am in my college and I hardly ever have time for recipes and mask.
    2. When I mix olive oil I am assured that there will be absolutely no damage to my hair due to peppermint. Essential oils can dry up hair and sometimes even when you mix it with other ingredients, they all can combine together to have the same drying effect. However, when it is olive oil there is a guarantee that hair will get enough nourishment from that and the peppermint will take over the scalp to cure it from dandruff and other scalp problems.

Otherwise I followed whatever the instruction said and did nothing extra. Hope this helped 😀

  15. I loved the details in the article and more so how it has covered everything from essential oil remedies to spray and even shampoos. I am curious to see how it will work. I have heard great things about essential oil and how they can clear the scalp. Will definitely drop down a review after I use a couple of these remedies.

  16. There are a lot of remedies given here. If it was just natural random ingredients I wouldn’t have had this doubt but because it is essential oil I want to ask. Can we use multiple remedies or will it damage the hair ? I was curious about trying cedar wood and lavender both for treating my dandruff. Also is it okay if I use an essential oil shampoo or will it be too much?

  17. @HelenRivera Hi, I don’t think putting so much essential oil on your hair at one go is a good idea. Essential oil is quite strong. You can try to use one first and see how it works on your scalp and then slowly add on the other. Similarly you can experiment a little with the shampoo as well but I still feel you will go over board with it if you mix essential oil plus also use essential oil shampoo. You can try it though. Try as much as you can till you have got those manes. With time they will go to.

  18. @HelenRivera I think there is no problem. I think it will work exacty how a lemon conditioner works after a lemon shampoo. It only enhances the effect and does not damage it. You can try it. It totally varies from hair to hair as well. Give it a try and see if it works for your hair and scalp. All the best.

  19. @HelenRivera There are a lot of recipes that club together more than 2 essential oil in smaller quantity. I don’t think there will be any problem until and unless you are using two different recipes in one single day. Maybe try alternating between them for safer results.

  20. @miaanderson I don’t think natural ingredients work instantly for anyone. Be it any hair type. It is natural and will harm your scalp the least. However, it will also take a lot of time to reflect the results.

  21. @JuneMathew oiling is good for dandruff but it totally depends the kind of dandruff. If it very minimum then you can carry on with using whichever oil you were using. But if it is in excess, then you will have to stop using oils like vegetable or olive. See, dandruff can happens if the scalp is very oily as it causes a yeast called Malassezia or pityrosporum. This yeast feed on the excess oil and dead skin cells on the scalp, causing the skin cells to shed more frequently and clump into flakes. So in a case like this, it will be advisable if you use essential oil instead of carriers.

  22. @LeiWang, Absolutely. You can leave tea tree oil on your scalp and hair overnight just make sure it is well diluted with other ingredients. If not, leaving something as strong as raw essential oil can weaken the follicles which would lead to hair breakage, It can also cause your hair to become dry and frizzy.

  23. I have heard the least about cedar wood oil among the lot. It is safe to apply it on the skin? Should I do a test patch before or is it safe enough that I can directly apply it onto my scalp? My scalp is extremely dry and flaky. It is not very sensitive and does not grow pimples or anything on the scalp like how it happens for a lot of people.

  24. @ChloeJones It is always advisable to do a test patch with things that you try for the first time. Even if it is natural, it can have drastic damage when it comes to your scalps health. That is why, always do a test patch before applying to the whole hair. It is strong enough to induce heavy hair fall. Now about cedar woods safety in terms of its application, it is totally safe. Cedar wood essential oil has anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, anti fungal, tonic, astringent, diuretic, sedative and insecticidal properties which are property enough to convince one towards its benefits. Give it a try, I am sure it won’t disappoint.

  25. Amongst all these essential oil, which is the best for dandruff removal which would be permanent.

  26. Which are the top 5 cedar wood essential oil brand that I can consider while shopping for my essential oil to treat the dandruff?

  27. Well, it is a little difficult to track down the best cedar wood because it is not known and used by the people a lot. However, I love essential oils and due to my research, it was not very difficult to find that out.
Here is a curated list of the top cedar wood that you can use.

    1. UpNature Cedarwood Essential Oil
    2. Elansa 100% Pure Cedarwood Essential Oil
    3. Naturalis 100% Pure Natural Cedarwood Essential Oil
    4. Heilen BIopharm Cedarwood Essential Oil
    5. Aroma Magic Cedarwood Oil

Try from any one of them. They are all rated more than 4 and I personally have used 3 out of them. They work brilliantly. Try and let me know somehow how you likes it. Thank you 😀

  28. If I use essential oil properly and then get rid of dandruff is there a chance that they will come back again?

  29. @ScarlettTaylor Hi Scarlet, how I wish it worked like that but sadly no. While it might not come back for a long time but if you stop using essential oil then it is bound to come back. Treating them have a few solutions but there are zillion reason why they can come back. The environment is of no help now, the pollution adds to it ad more than that people have become so money minded that they are claiming to solve the problem using their products but nothing truly works. So apart from the genes and natural l scalp condition, there are a lot of reason why your dandruff can come back.

  30. @Emily Thank you so much for such an instant reply. I think it was just seconds before that I posted a question and you answered. Thank you so much for taking time out for this. You are very kind.

  31. I saw this article when I was looking for a solution to this rainfall of flakes that happens even if I scratch my hair once and that too very gently. I was gifted a set of essential oil when my Aunt went to India. She is a huge collector of all things exotic and she got this carved suitcase for me which had these essential oils in small potion bottle. It looked almost magical and hence I never used it. I finally saw this article and I wanted to give grape seed oil and lavender oil a fair chance. I used it for about a month and a half and I was shocked. My scalp for some weird reason looked fairer which is honestly a little funny but the flakes problem was entirely gone, I used it twice in a week and it gave me these results. Loved it. I would recommend it to everyone. Use it as the instruction says and you will not be disappointed.

  32. I absolutely love the alignment of this article. It practically covers every thing from remedies, shampoos to even essential oil spray. I am the most curious about it. I don’t have a lot of dandruff on my scalp but I would love to try it because a spray of essential oil sounds supremely relaxing to me right now and I am in the total beach mode. Will surely drop down a review for it here in reply section so that even you guys can read and benefit out of it. Thank you so much glowpink.

  33. I used the banana and lavender essential oil treatment and now I have hair that has dried banana stuck to entire length. I tried everything possible. From rinsing it gain to get rid of it to taking it out using a comb, but nothing works. I also tried to pull them out using my nails but that is leading to a lot of hair breakage, Now, my hair has gotten really soft and the scalp also looks crystal clear as I hoped for it to but what should I do about these particles?

  34. @SiennaJones I faced the same issue when I was trying out a mask using banana and yoghurt and the only way I could take it out was by pulling it out using my bare nails. Don’t wet it as it will make it even more difficult to take it out. So, best would be take it using your nails.
Pro tip for next time: Blend the banana into a runny juice and only then apply it onto your scalp and hair. That is the only possible way to get rid of banana from hair. All the best. And don’t worry, the hair that breaks will come back. Just keep your hair healthy and breathing.

  35. Absolutely loved the depths of these article. I love how even multiple recipes to shampoos are given here. Makes it so much easier. Thank you so much Glowpink. You always make it easier to have a hair and skin that is healthy. Also loved the change from slides to actual videos. It is great. Much power.
