Excessive hair growth in females  – Causes

1 – Hormonal imbalance

Sometimes facial hair may be seen on upper lips, lower lips, chin, chest, and back. Generally, women have a very low level of male hormones called androgens. Sometimes this hormone is secreted more than the required amount which leads to unwanted hair growth. This type of hair growth like males is called hirsutism[2].

Hirsutism is caused mainly due to the PCOD’S(polycystic ovarian syndrome). There may be a one or multiple cysts on the ovaries that affect the hormone production. Along with facial hair, PCOD’S may also cause several side effects like acne, infertility, pain in the pelvic region, irregular periods, weight gain, and Diabetes etc. Hirsutism can be diagnosed physically by hair growth. Your health care provider might suggest some other tests like blood tests, and ultrasound of the ovaries and uterus, and x-ray. The immediate treatment given to hirsutism is weight loss. It reduces the androgen levels thereby reducing hair growth.

2 – Medication

Excess intake of medicine may lead to facial hair. Medicine called minoxidil which is used to treat baldness may also cause facial hair growth as side effects. Phenytoin, diazoxide is an anti-seizure medicine, Testosterone, Glucocorticoids etc whose usage may lead to unwanted hair growth.

3- Heredity

Facial hair may also be caused due to the person’s heredity. The genetical imbalance is also a major cause of facial hair growth. These genes are obtained from either of the parents. The number of conditions like Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, obesity, and ovarian diseases gets caused as hereditary diseases.

4- Obesity

Obesity is one of the main cause of facial hair growth. Obese women will be under stress. That stress will show the effect on the androgen hormones that are responsible for the facial hair growth.

5 – Cushing’s syndrome

Facial hair growth may also be caused due to Adrenal glands. The glands that are located above the kidneys are called adrenal glands. Cushing’s syndrome occurs when your adrenal gland produces too much hormone called cortisol. Such a process is called Hypercortisolism. Women with this Cushing’s syndrome may develop facial and body hair. Irregular menstrual periods, headache, Fatigue[3], Weak muscles, depression etc are some of the side effects of Cushing’s syndrome.

6 – Congenital adrenal hyperplasia

It is also a genetical disorder that is caused due to the adrenal glands.

7 – Tumours

Tumors like adrenal tumors and ovarian tumors may cause facial hair growth.

Face Waxing At Home

Step 1 – Selection of wax – Selection of waxing kit is a very important step in this process. It is available in all the nearby beauty stores. It is better to go for cold wax kits which are less painful and cause less damage. Try to choose aloe vera wax for the sensitive skin because aloe vera soothes the skin.

Step 2 – Prepare your skin – Before waxing, clean your face with regular face wash and pat dry with a soft towel. Gentle exfoliation will remove all the dirt and will keep the face clean. The wax will stick to the face only when the face is clean.

Step 3 – Moisturization – Immediately after cleaning your face, moisturize your skin. The moisturized skin will be less prone to irritation after waxing.

Step 4 – Heat wax – The face wax should be heated up before starting the procedure. After heating let it cool for some time because the hot wax may burn your skin. Before applying the wax on the face, just do a patch test on the wrist to test the temperature of the wax.

Step 5 – Start with application – Before applying the wax, clean your hands to prevent the entry of germs on to the face. Once the wax is warm enough, start applying it on the face, concentrate on the place where you want to remove the hair. After applying spread the wax in the direction of hair growth carefully. Then, apply a cloth strip on the wax and press it for 2 – 3 seconds.

Step 6 – Remove the cloth strip – After application wait for 30 seconds. Now, hold the skin tight on one side and remove the cloth strip in the opposite direction of the hair growth. The number of times this has to be done may depend upon the length of the cloth strip.

Step 7 – Moisturization – There may be a little bit of irritation after waxing. Try to apply some oil-free moisturizer to soothe your skin. If you apply the oil moisturizer, it may clog the pores. It is better to choose aloe vera moisturizer which soothes the skin. Apply some astringent as antiseptic to protect skin from infections.

Pros & Cons:

Pros:

  • Women with less facial hair[4] may choose threading or bleaching. But, for few women with more facial hair, waxing will be the right option.
  • While threading and shaving, the hairs will grow in a thick form. But in waxing, the hair will become thin because of the uprooting of hair and the hair grown back will be very thin.
  • The smoothness of the skin will be there for at least two weeks without any pain.
  • Waxing is a very good technique when compared to bleaching and threading as it removes 100% of the facial hair.
  • One more important thing about waxing is that it damages the hair follicles and makes the hair growth slow.
  • It is a very economical process which can be even done at home.

Cons:

  • It is painful during this process. While pulling the wax on the opposite side of the hair growth, there will be a pain as the skin is very sensitive.
  • Immediately after waxing, there might be a little bit of irritation and redness.
  • If the wax is too hot, it leads to burns like patches on the skin which looks embarrassing.
  • Waxing strip has to be pulled many times. Hence, there might be a lot of pain during waxing.
  • After waxing, the skin sensitivity will be there for at least 1 hour.

Electrolysis[11] is a process of removing unwanted hair from the body or face. In this process, the heat or chemical energy passes through the hair and damages it. Then the hair follicle is removed with the help of tweezers. It can be done on different parts of the body like Face, Abdomen, Thighs, Eyebrows, and Legs. The number of sittings for hair removal may differ from one person to another person. The treatment timing will be around 30 minutes to 1 hour. Electrolysis is not much painful but be careful while choosing the electrologist. He should be a professional in doing the procedure and he should use only needle electrolysis which is very effective in removing the hair permanently.

4 – Laser treatment –

This procedure not only removes the facial hair from outside, but it also works inside the hair follicle and removes the roots of the hair. It may vary according to the growth phase of the hair follicles. If you are going for the laser treatment, then don’t remove your hairs for 6 months. It will be easy for the technician to choose his target. The rest of the skin is covered by a gel. Then the technician passes a beam of light on the target area and works on it. After treatment, your skin will be treated with ice cubes and moisturizing lotions.

5- Bleaching –

Skin bleaching[12] can be done with natural ingredients. Though this method does not remove any facial hair, it is also considered as a hair removal method. Actually, this method removes the dark pigment present in the hair and change it to the light shade which makes it invisible. The effect of this method depends upon the thickness of the hair. The whole process will not take more than 15 minutes. After bleaching, rinse your face with lukewarm water.
