A suntan can be defined as the ability of your skin to protect you from the harmful Ultraviolet (UV) rays of the Sun. But it is not that all tans can give you sun protection. There are 2 types of suntans which are caused due to the 2 different types of UV rays. The two different types of UV rays are UVA and UVB. The suntan caused by both of these rays in your skin is entirely different. These tans are formed at different times and levels. When you understand this difference, you can identify the tan’s type and follow proper remedial measures accordingly.

Suntans also depend on the type of skin you have. The ability of the skin to tolerate sun exposure can be determined by the pigment the skin makes. It depends mainly on the time it takes to make it. These suntans are often accompanied with sunburns. Knowing the type of skin you have helps in following the most effective remedial measures. In this article, I will explain the types of tanning and how to get rid of a tan in different parts of your body like hands, legs, face, neck, and lips. I will give a brief explanation of all the common remedies to be taken for tan removal.

Skin Types

The following are certain types of skin, related to tanning:

  • Always burn, never tans
  • Always burns and tans very little
  • Burns somewhat but tans gradually
  • Burns a little but tans easily (mostly olive skin)
  • Rarely burns and tans easily (mostly brown skin)
  • Never burns tans dark black (mostly dark brown skin)

Types of Tanning

There are 2 types of tanning[1] that occurs once the skin is exposed to UV rays. It is very essential to know the differences between these two. It is because one of the types causes melanin secretion in your body. The other type of tanning does not cause melanin secretion in your body.  This will result in the tanning of your skin. Melanin[2] is the pigment which is secreted by your body. It contains little granules in it. These granules will form and give the tan color to your skin. The cells that are made in melanin pigment are called melanocytes.

The melanin granules in the skin will spread out in the top of your living skin layer in those areas where your skin gets exposed to the UV rays.  Even a thin layer of pigment granules and melanocytes in your skin can give you a little extra sun protection for your skin. The skin, to make this protection, takes some time.

There are two types of tanning response to UV light. Those two types are :

#1 Immediate Pigment Darkening

  • This is an immediate tanning
  • The tan happens just because your skin redistributes all those pigments that were already present in your skin.  No new melanin granules will be formed at that time.
  • This can happen right after both UVB exposure and UVA exposure.
  • These suntans start to occur right away and will get maximized after just a few hours from sun exposure.
  • This UVA or UVB exposure results in the free radicals. These free radicals will have the capability to damage the DNA present in your skin.
  • This tan will not protect your skin from the sun. So you can’t use these tanning beds for getting a little base tan and protect your skin during the summer seasons.

This type of UV exposure can cause an increase in the thickness of the dead skin cell layer of your skin (stratum corneum). These thick dead skin cell layers cannot give even a little sun protection to your skin. In such cases, try to exfoliate these dead skin cells[3]. They make skin look dull, dry, and leathery.

#2 Delayed Pigment Darkening

  • This type of darkening is delayed tanning that takes time to form.
  • This suntan happens only from exposure to UVB rays. UVB is the same sun rays that cause sunburn. So tanning is part of this pigment darkening which initiates sunburns.
  • It begins after 3 to 4 days of getting exposed to the sun. This becomes maximal at 10 to 14 days (a minimum of 2 weeks).
  • This darkening only happens when all of your DNA in the sun-exposed skin cells gets damaged by the UVB rays.

The tan occurs because your skin actually makes more melanin pigment granules and spreads them out in the living layer of your skin.  This literally means that they do not give you even a small amount of sun protection, & that too at the expense of DNA[4] damage. Suntans are temporary because these melanin granules grow up and out of your skin as your cells shed.  These types of tan will give your skin a nominal SPF that is near to the SPF 30 sunscreens that doctors always recommend. Like an immediate tan, this type of exposure also causes an increase in the dead skin cell layer of your skin (stratum corneum). This process of thickening will give a little sun protection. But it is the same layer of skin which we exfoliate to keep it looking attractive.

How Long does It Take To Get Rid Of Tan

It normally takes a couple of months to get rid of tan entirely. This also depends on the remedial measures we follow and the precautions we take to prevent further tanning. Following the remedial measures on every day or once in two days can offer you better results. It also varies according to the affected part of your body like face, neck, hands, and legs.

The type of skin you have and the nature of your work also are vital factors. If you stay outdoor for most of the time, then your skin will be exposed to the sun for a longer duration. In such cases, you have to cover your skin for preventing the skin tan. Your skin will require extra care for preventing a tan.

Tips To Avoid Tanning

No matter how hard we try, when you live in a country like India, there are no chances for avoiding the Sun. We get the sun for 8 out of 12 months in a year. Even during monsoons, it is present. We all are caught in the same dilemma as everyone is. We are searching about what all we can do apart from slathering on sunscreen to defend and protect ourselves from the hot sun. Here is a list of few things that can be done for preventing your skin from suntan:

Understanding the UVA and UVB rays

Before we disclose the secret to prevent tanning, we must know how UVA and UVB rays can affect our skin and cause skin tanning. UVA is a type of ultraviolet radiation that has a wavelength of 400-320  nm. And, UVB is also ultraviolet radiation having wavelengths between 320-290 nm. The shorter the wavelength, the higher will be the energy of radiation. Both these radiations have the power to damage the upper surface epidermal layers of the skin since they can alter the cells called DNA. To lessen these ill effects of the sun, you should have an understanding of SPF which is the Sun Protection Factor.

SPF can be defined as the measurement of the number of times your skin reddens due to the harmful sun rays. This can be done with and without sunscreen. Suppose your skin normally burns after being 10 minutes in the sun. Then you have to apply a sunscreen with an SPF containing 15. It will ensure that you can stay in the sun without burning for almost 140 to 150 minutes (15 times longer). However, this doesn’t mean that you should buy a sunscreen with an extremely high SPF. Because too much SPF can also affect the normal texture of your skin.

  • Avoid stepping out during peak time

Most of us know that morning sunshine can give us the essential dose of Vitamin D. But afternoon sunshine is not the same. So avoid stepping out in the sun between 10 am to 4 pm. This is because that is the time when the sun rays are strongest. They play a vital role in tanning and sunburn, especially during the summer months. If you must step out, you should wear a light fabric like rayon or even georgette that can keep you cool. It also minimizes the impact of the sun.

  • Sunglasses and hat for coverThe skin around your eyes, neck, and T-zone is very sensitive to the sun. These regions need utmost care and protection while you’re outdoors. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can offer 100% protection against these UV rays. So make sure you wear both. It is better to wear these even when you’re stepping out after 4 pm. The slightest rays of the sun can also immensely harm your skin.
  • Don’t forget SPFSunscreen lotions[5] and creams are the next most important one. Whenever you by a sunscreen, it is important to give much importance to its SPF value. Most of the doctors recommend the 9to5 Super Sunscreen SPF 50 PA++ +. It comes in two variants, namely, the hydrating and mattifying. It suits both dry or oily skin types. Most of us rely on the healthy white SPF 24 for our body and face. These lotions work wonders as skin protectants at all times. You should always remember to follow the same routine throughout the year. You will always require protectant in the summers to get rid of tan.
  • ReapplyIf you are out in the sun, then your sunscreen will not last more than a few hours. Make sure that you reapply sunscreen to ensure utmost care and protection for your skin. Even those people who constantly work in front of computer screens should follow this. It is important to follow this practice daily to make your skin appear even and brighter. It helps in making your skin free from a tan and sun damage.
  • Use homemade suntan recipesThere are many suntan recipes that are available. These suntan recipes differ for each of your body parts. It also depends on how much your skin gets exposed to the sun. All these recipes are made of natural ingredients which will not cause any side effects. These recipes can also help in nourishing your skin with proper nutrients[6]. It helps in maintaining the normal tone and the texture of your skin. It will not take much of your time to prepare and apply it. Before following any of the recipes, check whether they suit your skin types. If it doesn’t suit, you can follow some of the other available recipes that suit better for your skin. You should follow it at least once in two days for reducing the tan in your skin efficiently.
  • Tan removal Creams and lotionsThe advancement in technology has brought a solution for most of the issues we are facing every day. Nowadays many tan removal creams and lotions are available in the market. These creams can also be used for reducing the tan. Before using these creams it is always better to get suggestions from a dermatologist. You should avoid using these creams and lotions without getting them prescribed from the doctor. Before you start using it, you should test whether the cream or lotion suits your skin type. You should apply a small amount of cream on your skin and see whether you face any issues. If you face any problems like itching or burning then it is better to avoid using it. If you don’t face any of the issues you can use it. Apply these creams on the areas where your skin has got tanned. Do not apply it to the areas other than the tanned regions.

DIYs For Tanned Lips

Lips are one of the most sensitive parts of our face. Lips[12] add extra beauty to our face if maintained properly. Face care is not about maintaining only the complexion of your facial skin. It also depends on maintaining the other parts like eyes & lips with proper care and hygiene. It gets exposed to the sun very easily whenever we go out and might get darker.

  8. Great job! I just have one doubt regarding the suntan. Will the early morning sun rays also cause sun tan when we expose our skin to them? I ask this because, my grandma always use to tell me to expose my skin to the early morning rays that comes from the sun. She always insists me to go to terrace and do the Surya Namashkara facing the direction of sun. When I ask why she would tell that this is one of the best ways to make our skin produce a lot of vitamin D using the rays that comes from the Sun. Will this cause sun tan in my skin? Won’t the vitamin D that gets produced in the skin prevent it from getting tanned?

I do take most of the precautionary steps like applying sunscreen lotions, creams and covering my face with the cloth. Even though my skin gets tanned, the effects are less and these lotions prevent my skin from getting too much tanned. But I also have a fear that will too much of exposure to sun regularly lead to the occurrence of skin cancer in my body? I recently read an article stating that exposing skin to sun can lead to the formation of cancer cells in our body. But, I cannot rely on a single article completely. So, I wanted to know whether that was true or not. If any of you know any information regarding this, please share it over here. So, that it would be better for me to prevent my skin from getting affected by skin cancer.

  14. Hello everyone, I do waxing every two weeks once in my hands and leg most of the times. But then, my skin gets tanned whenever I travel out during the peak hours in the afternoons. Will the removal of hair from my hands and legs be a reason for the skin to get tan? I came across a few articles stating that the hair present in your hand and legs are the protective layer in preventing your skin from the UV and the other rays from the sun. The extra hair will be a barrier to your skin when it gets exposed to the sunlight. Is this statement a true one or a fake one? 15. This article contains a lot of information that could be useful for many of the people living around the world. But I have another doubt. I have the habit of using certain lip care products. But then will the constant usage of lip care products cause any side effects on my lip? Will this make my lip to appear dark in color? And also can I apply the sunscreen lotion on my lips? Will it protect the skin layer in my lips from getting tanned? Or should I avoid applying it on my lips as there are high chances for them to get consumed while eating food or drinking water?

  16. In the normal days my lips appear bright and fresh. But during the winter times, my lips will start to get dry extremely. This leads to the peeling of the outer layer of my lips. I am very much worried about this. Why does this happen only during the winter seasons? Please suggest me a remedy to cure this problem. 17. Whenever I go out and come home during the peak hours or in the afternoon, I notice a change in the color tone of my skin. In addition to this, I get some pinkish and reddish rashes on my skin in the hands and legs where the skin layer gets direct contact with the sunlight while going out. Though I apply sunscreen lotions and creams, this does not help me in any way. These rashes are very painful and also itch most of the times. If I avoid going out in sunlight for the next 2 days, then those rashes in my legs and hands start to disappear. But this does not get completely cured from my skin. The area where I got rashes on my skin is still painful and causes irritations most of the times. Also because of these rashes, now my skin has become very rough and also loses its normal soft and smooth texture. Why is this happening to me? I also tried applying some of the lotions and creams that could cure rashes on the skin. And I also tried a few of the home remedies after reading some articles. But none of them worked out on my skin in curing those rashes. I wanted to get out of this skin problem as soon as possible. Please help me with this by suggesting a suitable home remedy or a cure for this problem.

  18. Hello CAROLA KIM! You don’t have to worry for having dry skin any more. You can use any of the home remedies that are mentioned here. Even I also have a very dry and sensitive skin. This article was referred by my friend and I also tried the curd and haldi pack home remedy that is mentioned in this article. It really worked on my skin in removing the suntan effectively from my skin. Other than removing the tan, it also helped in making my skin to retain the moisture content within the layer of my skin. The curd used in this remedy helped in locking the moisture content within the layer of my skin. So, my skin is not facing any dryness issues and sun tan issues now. I really have a clean and clear skin with a naturally perfect color tone. This did not make any side effects on my skin. Now I am really feeling happy and satisfied after using this home remedy. Also my personal suggestion would be to avoid the remedies that contain lemon juice in it. This is because lemon juice will normally dry out your skin when it is being used. So, it is best suited for those people who have oily skin types. So, you can follow any of the home remedies that do not contain the lime juice as an ingredient in it. It will really work on your skin and will offer you the benefits to your skin. My sincere thanks to the people who worked together in delivering such an awesome piece of content that could be very helpful in uplifting many of the people’s lifestyle and well being.
