Step by step tutorial to apply lip gloss perfectly

In the previous section, we learned about how to make lip gloss by various means in a natural way. In this section, we will learn the procedure to apply it on your lips.
Lip gloss is surely one of the most common things which can be found in the handbags of most of us. Girls are usually fond of wearing lip gloss as it gives a shiny bright look to their lips. Sometimes lip gloss disappoints us by giving a messy look. So, there are certain rules that are needed to be followed while applying the lip gloss. These techniques if applied correctly can help your lips look super fantastic and shiny. Here is a step by step process to be followed while applying the lip gloss.
It is very important to choose a colour for your lips that perfectly suits your skin tone to give a brighter look. This is very essential to enhance your facial makeup. The normal shades that match with the three common types of skin tones are mentioned below for your reference:
Perfect lips

Shades with the skin tone

  • Fair-skinned – light shades, beige and pink
  • Medium-toned – mauve, berry and rose
  • Dark-skinned – plum, red and chocolate

Matching the lip gloss according to the occasion you are planning to attend is also a key factor in enhancing your looks. If you are trying to add some edge to your looks then you might try using darker and sensual colors like the deep red. A more innocent look might be achieved with the lighter and gentler shades like the pink and even your skin tone. The playful colors like the orange, blue and other metallic tones might be perfect for a fun day when you go out with your friends.

Before you start applying lip gloss you need certain other things that are required to give a perfect bright look:

Things needed

  • Lip Scrub
  • A Lip Balm/Lip Conditioner
  • Lip Liner
  • Lipstick
  • Lip gloss
  • Tissue

Step 1: Removing dead cells

You can first start by prepping your lips. At first, you should use the lip scrub to remove the dead skin cells or chapped/cracked lips before you start with any of the lip makeups. Do a massage all over your lips with the lip scrub for about two to three minutes. After the massage, you can rinse your lips with water. If you don’t have a lip scrub you can also use petroleum jelly or vaseline as a lip scrub. When you apply vaseline, you can scrub it with the help of a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Step 2: Get rid of the dryness

The next step is using a lip balm or lip conditioner in order to remove the dryness in your lips. The lip balm or lip conditioner will make your lips more soft and supple. After applying it you can leave it to get dry for about one to two minutes.

Step 3: Blot the excess part

Once you are done with applying the lip balm or lip conditioner, take a tissue and blot the excess lip balm to give it a perfect shape. This will prevent the lipstick from spreading to the other regions. It also makes the application of other products and the entire process to be an easier one.

Step 4: Apply a foundation or a concealer

After blotting the excess part, choose a concealer or a foundation that matches your natural lip color. This will even out the lips in one go and provide an even base for the further process. You should be more specific and careful in choosing a matching foundation or a concealer. Because this can make a major difference in your looks.

Step 5: Draw the outline with a lip pencil

At first, you should analyze the shape of your lips. Then take a lip pencil having the color of your choice and start drawing the outline of your lip. You can start by applying from the center of the upper lip by following your natural lip line. The same procedure should be followed for the lower lip. And then, you can start coloring the entire lip using the lip liner as that works as a great base and helps the lip color to stay on your lips for a longer duration.

Step 6: Apply the Lipstick

After all these steps come the most important one. It is the lipstick application. Take a small lip brush and with it touch the lipstick softly. Then start applying the lipstick with the lip brush using short strokes. After this, you can start covering the entire lips slowly. Using a lip brush for applying the lipstick will add more precision to the application and helps in attaining the proper shape. After applying the lipstick, make sure that all the areas of your lips are evenly covered without any mismatches.

Step 7: Figure out the lip gloss and start applying

Once you are done with applying the lipstick you can start applying the lip gloss. For this, you have to figure out the type of lip gloss you have with you for getting the most effective results. There are mainly three different kinds of lip glosses that are available and the way you apply them on your lips differ with each type. They are mentioned clearly in the section below with their properties and ways to apply:

  • If you notice a dip-stick with a wand-type applicator at the end of your lip gloss then you are using a liquid lip gloss. This can be applied best by dipping the stick inwards and dragging or rubbing it along your lips.
  • If there is a solid stick-type applicator in your lip gloss then it’s a roll-on type of lip gloss. For the best application, you can rub the lip gloss gently in a circular motion on your lips.
  • Tube lip gloss should be squeezed out a little bit at a time onto a lip brush or a sponge applicator and then spread gently onto your lips.

A General Instruction for lip gloss

You should always start applying the lip gloss from the center of the lips and eventually drag the sponge applicator along the length of your lips. You should avoid applying the lip gloss above the natural lip line. After applying it completely you can blot the excess lip gloss with the help of a tissue paper. Do it carefully such that the other part of your lips doesn’t get disturbed. Blotting will prevent the color from spreading.

  2. Hey, i am very dark skinned. which color lip gloss would work best for me. I have a bid family function coming up. my sister is getting married and i want to look my best. any suggestions are appreciated. thanks a bunch.

  3. Hey Amanda, I am also dark skinned and 32 years old so I have figured out which color looks best on me. you also should try different colors to find out the best one for you. however, there are a few shades which generally look better on darker skinned people. You can start with trying lip glosses of deep and darker shades of colors, like deep reds, and chocolate shades. Good luck and have fun at the wedding 🙂

  4. Congratulations to you and your sister. Give her my regards :p Awesome post btw. i never thought i could make my own lip gloss. I have been throwing money at these cosmetic companies for years. Time to take back the power. xo lots of love

  5. Hey guys. Great article as always. I tried making the honey lip balm but maybe I messed up the quantities but it is too thin and runny to be used as a balm. What did I do wrong?? and what should I do now?? Please help me out. Thanks.

  6. Hey Deepali, yes you probably messed up the proportions. I tried it also and it worked nicely for me. You can add more beeswax to make it thicker. Thanks for the great post by the way. Keep it up.

  7. Brilliant post team glowpink!! not many women know that you do not just have to blindly bow down to consumerism and capitalism. I have been making my own beauty care products whenever I can, using natural homemade ingredients, and I could not be happier with the results I get. I also used cosmetic products from the market for years before I realized that I can do what they do myself, and do it better too. That is why I try to tell everyone I can about the beauty and wonder of natural ingredients. You can do anything with them and treat most of your issues and problems. Sorry for the rant. Again, awesome post, keep more like this coming 🙂

  8. Is there a specific site from where you get your ingredients and products from. I am curious to know. Thank you for the great post.

  9. Hey Sabrina, you can easily find any and all the ingredients used here online. I usually order my supplies from amazon as it has the widest variety available.

  10. Hey guys. Terrific post on how to make your own lip gloss. I am really glad that i found this post or i would still be buying my lip balms and gloss 😀 . I do have one question though. all the lipsticks in the market have slant to them. why is that? and how can I do that to my homemade lip gloss too. Thanks in advance.

  11. Hello Kacey, the lipsticks and other lip products have that because that make for a better application. It is easier to use and apply that way is all. You can also do that with your own diy lipsticks by just slicing it diagonally with a knife or something. Cheers and good luck.

  12. Awesome post!! really excited and eager to try some of these out. I have a query regarding beeswax. Where can i get it and what is like the best type or brand. Please help me out guys

  13. Are there any substitutes to beeswax which can be used in place of it. Thank you for the reply.

  14. You can just as easily use any other edible wax. But be aware that beeswax is the best option as it is probably the most moisturizing one.

  15. Nice post but i just have one concern. you mentioned to use crayons for one of the DIY lip gloss. Are crayons safe for application or ingestion?? or are there specific types of crayons which could be used. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks a bunch for the comprehensive post. I actually learned a lot which I did not know before.

  16. Gretchen you should look for non-toxic crayons. Crayons are meant for kids and they put everything they get your hands on in their mouth at least once so they have to be non-toxic. I have 3 little kids and I buy crayons from crayola for them. I find them to be of great quality and they are totally non-toxic too. I am sure that At least one of my kids eat a full crayon within a week. What you gonna do, that’s just how it is 🙂

  17. Yeah it is awesome I did not even know I could make my own Lip gloss. I have business idea now hmmm

  18. Hey guys, great article. Now women won’t have to depend upon brands to get nice glossy lips.

  19. terrific and brilliant post team glowpink. I have one question – can I use some other oil in place of coconut oil?? thanks a lot again for the awesome post and keep writing more stuff like this. I am sure many women like me love to make their own beauty care stuff so that we feel safer because we know all the ingredients and they are all natural. keep it up. xo

  20. yes, you can try some other carrier oils which are good for skin. You can use almond oil or olive oil too. I have tried olive oil and results were totally fine and I loved it!

  21. Hey, i saw you used something called pearl dust to add some glitter and shine effects. I was wondering if I can use non toxic craft glitter instead of that. will it be safe to apply on lips near mouth?? any info is helpful thanks

  22. Hey people, can someone tell me what is beeswax and why to use it?? can I use something else in place of it or not??

  23. You are gonna need beeswax for your gloss to hold its form. It also helps moisturize and hydrate your lips well and keep em that way . You should look for it, it isn’t that hard to acquire. It is produced by bees it is totally natural ingredient

  24. Hey girls, I have important and useful tip for you. — when making your lip gloss with glitter, make sure the glittering stuff you use is really fine and powdery. otherwise you will have big glittery dots on your lips which is not going to look the best. Good luck to everyone.

  25. Thanks! nice tip . i have one too. you can use edible glitter or sugar glitter as alternatives if anyone can’t find the pearl dust powder

  26. I love this article!! I am big advocate of using natural products and whenever possible creating your own DIY remedies to treat your own problems. It gives me a sense of independence and capability that I can achieve anything. I create a lot of my own skin and health care items and remedies but I never tried lip gloss. Wasn’t really aware that that was an option. I thank you profusely for opening my eyes and turning a lot of women like me onto this. Now, i will be able to use lip gloss too as it would be hand made by me 🙂

  27. Hey guys. I tried a couple in my home and am really pleased with the results. Just one thing – how can I make my lip gloss thicker. It is coming a little thinner and runny than i would like . what should I do to to change that.

  28. You can try adding a bit more of beeswax. that is what I did because I also wanted my lipgloss to be a bit more solid and waxy you know

  29. Thanks a bunch for sharing your recipes on how to make your own lip glosses. I am sure many women would find this very helpful. I know I did. Thanks again and keep more like this article coming, we love it!

  30. Hey beautifuls, I have discovered another wax which you can use instead of beeswax, if you are vegan or something or can’t find it. It is candelilla wax and it is made from plants!

  31. Hey, I am an vegan and wanted to know if there is any alternative to beeswax which I can use. It will be amazing if there is and I will love you forever. kidding, you will just have my thanks and gratitude. Thanks a lot in advance.

  32. Yes, as some people have mentioned previously, there are alternatives available which you can use. You can try using candelilla wax or soy wax as both are plant based waxes.

  33. You can try the DIY carnuba wax lip gloss recipe which is already given in the post. It has all natural and vegan ingredients so you will be good to go

  34. Awesome post! I was really excited to try these until I saw a dreadful ingredient – coconut oil. Don’t get me wrong I am sure it is a wonderful ingredient, but I wouldn’t know because I am allergic to it and have been for as long as I can remember. So, what I am really trying to say is – Can I use something else instead or not??

  35. Yep, of course, you can use any other soft oil to substitute coconut oil. A few oils which I would suggest are – avocado oil, grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, hemp oil. Good luck!!

  36. Hey great article on lip glosses. I was wondering what the storage procedure was if any. won’t these harden over time?? thanks for the help

  37. These lip glosses stay fairly soft in room temperature but will certainly harden in colder climates. I found that you can adjust the amount of ingredients to get your desired consistency. Use more wax if you want it harder or use more oil or less beeswax if you want thinner and more runny lip gloss. I wish you the best in your efforts and good luck. See ya

  38. Hello, I know also want to make my own lip gloss 🙂 I was wondering if can use my tea tree oil in place other oils?? will there be any difference ??

  39. This is a good question which I wasn’t aware about a few months ago. tea tree is an essential oil so its very strong and you can’t use it to replace coconut oil as that is a mild carrier oil. essential oils aren’t recommended to use directly. they are generally used diluted as that is the best way. So, to answer your question, no i would not recommend replacing coconut oil with tea tree oil. You can use it diluted with some other carrier oil and that will be fine.

  40. Impressive work! I had no idea that I could be making my own lip gloss instead of always buying chemical laden market products. And in so many different ways too. You guys have my thanks! Please keep on bringing more awesome and eye opening articles for us netizens.

  41. Great article on how to make your own lip gloss. I have been making my own beauty care products along with lip gloss for a while now and I would never even think of going back to the name brand cosmetic products. Everyone should get on board this natural living trend. I feel so closer to nature and the earth and I have never been more beautiful or healthy. Keep on doing what you guys are doing and keep on spreading the word. Lots of Love, Tiffany

  42. I would have to agree with you. I have not been using natural remedies to take care of my body and health for a long time, but for the time I have been using them, they have been totally marvelous. It really changes your life for the better. Wish I could have known about this before but oh well, better late than never, right? 😀 And yeah, awesome post. I have not tried making my own lip gloss before but that was because I never thought that that could be done also, but I will definitely do that now. Can’t wait to try my own lip gloss, I will get back to you with the results. Great job guys, keep it up.

  43. Hey guys, great article on lip gloss. I was wondering are these lip glosses kids-friendly?? If they are not what should I do to make them so. My little girl is starting to get into this kinda stuff and I want to give her totally natural and safe products to start. Any help is appreciated, thanks a lot.

  44. Pretty sure most of these are completely kid friendly. Just take a look at the ingredients for each and decide for yourself. all of these are natural and mild ingredients so I think you are good to go.

  45. What kind of essential oils would go best for my lips?? I have very dry and big lips. pls help

  46. I don’t know about your particular lips but as is given in the post- “The best essential oils that can be used in making lip gloss are Frankincense Essential Oil, Myrrh Essential Oil, Chamomile Essential Oil, Ginger Essential Oil and Cardamom Essential Oil”. So yeah, I would go for one of them. You can look up each of these o find out what kind of benefits and effects it will have. Hope this helped. bye.

  47. Thanks a lot! This did help. I somehow missed that in the post itself. Have a good day.

  48. Hey guys! great job compiling all these different DIY lip gloss. awesome job. I have a suggestion for all the women here which you gals will find pretty handy believe me. Always exfoliate your lips too, many women exfoliate their skin but forget their lips. Your lips are also part of your skin and would benefit a lot from removal of dead skin cells. That in itself will help make your lips pinker, livelier and much better looking. So do not forget to scrub your lips too ladies. I use my toothbrush to do it. but make sure it is a soft bristle one. Just wet its bristles and rub it over your lips in gentle circular motions. Trust me ladies you will love the feel and look of your lips after a couple weeks of doing this
