What is the generic name (s)?

Maxtra syrup has the following generics , also given is their composition with respect to their individual strength per 5 ml of the syrup:

Phenylephrine Hydrochloride[1] I.P. – 5mg + Chlorpheniramine Maleate[2] IP – 2mg

How does it work ?

Maxtra syrup works as the combination of the two generic medicines’ action, as explained below:

Phenylephrine Hydrochloride: It causes constriction of the blood cells causing a reduction in the swelling of the tissues of the nose by stimulating the receptors present on them. Because of this the nasal congestion[3] gets relieved as there is a decrease in the blood flow in the nose blood vessels.

Chlorpheniramine Maleate: Whenever there is an attack of substances which cause allergy[4], a chemical substance called histamine[5] gets secreted which needs to be blocked.This generic hinders the histamine ,thereby relieving the symptoms of allergy.

What are it’s uses ?

Maxtra Syrup is used to manage cold, nasal congestion, cough[6], running nose or Rhinorrhea, fever of children( aged more than two years). It relieves the pain caused due to cold, fever and flu[7].

The government also categorizes medicines that can be addictive as controlled substances. Finally,  do not self-medicate and increase your body’s dependence on medicines without taking the advice of a doctor.

What if I miss the dose of Maxtra Syrup?

Use the missed dose as soon as you notice. If the time is already close to the next dose,  skip the missed dose and continue your dosing schedule. Do not use overdose to make up the missed dose as it may cause serious side effects.  If you are routinely missing the doses, try to use an alarm or asking a family member to remind you. Please consult your doctor to discuss modifications in your dosing schedule or a new schedule to make up for missed doses.

Can I travel after taking  Maxtra syrup?

Irrespective of side effects, it is better to avoid travelling when your not well. This medicine may cause dizziness or a headache as side effects. Can Maxtra syrup be taken on an empty stomach?

This medicine has to be taken with or without food. Please follow your doctor’s advice on how you to use this medicine.

What is the Dosage?

The dosage of Maxtra Syrup varies with the age of the child, as explained below:

  • If child’s age is less than two years: Not to be given.
  • If child’s age is between two and six years: 2.5 ml to 5 ml, after every twelve hours till the period prescribed by the doctor
  • If child’s age is more than six years: 5 ml to 10 ml after every twelve hours till the period prescribed by the doctor.

This syrup can cause sleepiness or mild drowsiness,

The maximum period this should be taken is seven days straight in a row. Please contact your doctor in case if there is no signs of improvement even after giving this syrup to the child for seven days.

What are the precautions that need to be taken ?

Following precautions should be taken for this syrup:

  1. Use with caution in patients with aspirin allergy
  2. Use with caution in patients with thyroid disease
  3. Use with caution in patients with increased intraocular pressure
  4. Use with caution in patients with diabetes
  5. Use with caution in patients with seizure disorders
  6. Use with caution in patients with history of bronchospasm
  7. Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease
  8. Do not take if you are taking any other products that contain Chlorpheniramine
  9. Remember not to exceed intake more than two grams in one day
  10. Do not take if you are allergic to any of the other ingredients
  11. Do not take Phenylephrine if you drink three or more alcoholic medicines every day, as this syrup can have a drowsy effect
  12. Do not take if you are allergic to Chlorpheniramine
