What is the generic name (s)?

The active ingredient and generic salt in this injection is medroxyprogesterone acetate. It is present in the strength of 150 mg/ml in the injection.

How does it work ?

Medroxyprogesterone acetate helps in regulation of menstrual periods and ovulation i.e., is monthly periods in women release of egg from the ovary.

This is an active semisynthetic derivative of progesterone but this is more potent than the its parent drug and has the potent to ovulatory inhibitory action as by the secretion of the adenohypophyseal gonadotropins.

What are it’s uses ?

This injection is used in control and treatment of following diseases and conditions:

  • A long term Female contraceptive.
  • Control and regulation of menstrual periods
  • Control of ovulation
  • Decrease endometrial hyperplasia i.e.,which lead to uterine cancer
  • Overgrowth in the lining of the uterus in postmenopausal women undergoing the estrogen hormonal therapy.

What if I miss the dose of Petogen Injection?

What are the precautions I need to take ?

Before administering the medicine /pretreatment patients physical examination is recommended, with reference to breast and pelvic organs, as well as a Papanicolaou smear.

One should take following precaution before start taking this medicine:

  • Take the lowest possible dose of corticosteroid required for the treatment.
  • If reduction in dosage is possible, reduction should be gradual.
  • Do not take if you are allergic to Betamethasone or any any other component of this medicine.
  • Should not take these medicine unless prescribed by a qualified doctor.
  • This medicine is not suitable for infants.
  • Should not use this medicine for prolonged time.
  • Keep the medicine in room temperature and avoid contact with direct sunlight.
  • Prolonged use can alter the motility of sperm and affect fertility in men.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have peptic ulcers, cirrhosis, renal insufficiency and tuberculosis.
  • Not advised if you have hypertension and osteoporosis.
  • It can suppress the antibody response and effect functionality of immune system.
