Skin Preparation

While it might seem very easy to achieve neutral makeup look, it actually requires a lot of steps and much more expertise when compared to normal makeup.

Step 1 – Cleanse

If you don’t want to damage your skin beyond repair, make sure you cleanse it first. Adding a layer of makeup[1] on top of an unwashed face will clog the pores resulting in acne and breakouts.

  1. Take a dime-sized product on your fingers.
  2. Using a circular motion, transfer the face wash onto your face.
  3. Massage it for a good minute or two.
  4. Rinse off using plain or cold water.

Step 2 – Exfoliate

While cleansing helps with impurities, exfoliating helps in clearing off the dead skin. Skipping to exfoliate[2] the skin will lead to the makeup looking like a second layer as it would sit on the dead skin.

  1. Use a washcloth or towel and dip it into hot water.
  2. Place it on your face for 1-2 minutes. This would open the pores.
  3. Do your usual face wash routine.
  4. Take a little scrub onto your fingers and rub the scrub on your face in circular motion.
  5. Wash off the scrub using warm water first and then using cold water to close the pores.
  6. Pat dry

Homemade Exfoliators That You Must Try

Step 3 – Tone It

Once you have cleansed and exfoliated your skin, there might be some impurities that still resides. This is when toner comes handy. Leaving the residue unattended can stimulate the production of oil making your makeup look very artificial.

  1. Take a little handmade or readymade toner onto a cotton ball.
  2. Apply it onto your face covering all areas.
  3. Let it stay for 1 minute for your skin to absorb it.
  4. Seal using a moisturiser.

Homemade Toners

Step 4 – Moisturise

Once your face is prepped with a cleanser, exfoliator and toner, it is very important to lock the goodness with a moisturiser. This procedure helps in less damage to the skin[3] due to the usage of makeup.

  1. Take some moisturiser onto your finger.
  2. Dab it on your face as small dots.
  3. Massage it in till your face is covered with the moisturiser.
  4. Wait till the face absorbs all the moisturiser before putting on any makeup.

Part 2 – Steps To Achieve Nude Makeup Look

Now that you have prepped your face by following the holy Cleanse, Exfoliate, Tone and Moisturise method you have a canvas that will justify your neutral makeup look beautifully and most naturally.

Step 1 – Concealer

  1. Pick a concealer that is closest to your tone.
  2. Take a bare minimum amount of it and apply it under your eyes in the shape of a triangle.
  3. Apply it on your forehead and at the corners of your lips as well.
  4. Use your fingertips instead of your brush and blend it in.

Never dab it on your entire face when going for a nude look. It is always better to go with a sheer concealer over full coverage. Considering you will be using your hands and touching up your blemishes[4], keep your hands sanitized.

Homemade Concealer

Step 2 – Eyebrows

  1. Once you are done with the concealer, use a spoolie on your eyebrows and brush them in one single direction.
  2. Once that is done, fill in your eyebrows using your favourite product.
  3. Always go for shorter strokes to achieve the most natural look.

The best tool for this is an eyebrow pen as it gives more control to hand movements. You can always replace that and use the gel or the powdered formula, whichever suit your convenience. Make sure to always draw your eyebrow in one single direction.

Homemade Eyebrow Powder

Step 3 – Eyes

  1. Once you have done your eyebrows, opt for shades likes warm brown and beige for the perfect nude eyes.
  2. By using your ring finger, dab on the eyeshadow as it has the lightest pressure.
  3. Apply it evenly for a soft look.
  4. Smudge a little kohl on the outermost corner or use it on the inner upper eye.
  5. Finish your eye makeup using black mascara to add dimension to your lashes.

Make sure to use only mattes or cream formulated eyeshadows for a dewy look. You can skip kohl for a this makeup look. Also, while using a masacara make sure to not use a lot as it will give them a very dramatic feel.

Homemade Eyeshadow

Step 4 – Contouring

  1. Take your brush and swipe it through your contour palette.
  2. You can also opt for a liquid contour or a contour stick.
  3. If opting for powder, dab out all the excess product and swipe it once below your cheekbones and jawline.
  4. Make sure you don’t leave any visible lines.

While contouring isn’t necessary, if you opt for it, know that blending is the key.

Homemade Contour Powder

Step 5 – Blush

  1. Using warmer shades like clay nude and reddish browns are the best option for a nude look.
  2. Take your brush and swipe it once across the blush palette or use your liquid blush.
  3. If using a powder base, dab it to get rid of any excess product.
  4. Make a pouty face and apply it on your cheekbones.
  5. Blend.

Set your pinks and corals aside for this look. While warm shades like browns are perfect for warmer toned people (people with green veins), if you fall under the few cool undertoned population (people with blue veins), opt for mauvish or berry tone shades.

Homemade Blush

Step 6 – Foundation

  1. If you are warm toned, pick a foundation that has a tinge of yellow to it and is closest to your tone.
  2. Apply foundation to your entire face and using a wet sponge spread it evenly.
  3. Make sure to blend all the layers of previously applied makeup for a natural look.

To master the nude look and make it the most natural, always apply foundation in the end. Avoid full coverage for this look as they look heavy on the skin. You can opt for a tinted moisturiser[5], a BB cream or a CC cream as a foundation replacement.

Homemade Foundation

Step 7 – Lips

  • Select a colour that is very close to your lip colour.
  • Apply it on your lips using your fingers instead of directly going in with the stick.
  • Press a tissue on it and dab some rice powder or talcum powder, whichever is easily available.

Applying powder ensure that the shade is well fixed to your lips making it look like your second skin. Using your fingertips ensures that you are not applying a lot of product for the look to appear artificial and overdone. And voila! your neutral makeup look is ready.

Post makeup Care

While prepping for makeup and applying makeup is essential, post-makeup prepping is also very important. It helps to keep your skin healthy[15] even if you put on chemically infused products on your face. And the most important post care is makeup removal.

While there are options in the market in regards to makeup removals, you can always make one at home and do the protecting procedure with 100% natural ingredients.

  3. Shake it so that the mix combines with the cotton pads.

  6. It is easy, convenient and travel-friendly.

Tips To Master The Nude Makeup Look

  • Try putting the foundation after doing your concealer, blush and contour. This way when you blend in using your foundation, it will all look natural. The contour will create a natural depth due to this process and the blush will look like a natural flush.
  • Whatever product you pick, make sure that it is lightweight and wouldn’t look heavy when applied to the face. It’s okay if your flaws aren’t covered.
  • Playing with soft colour and neutrals should be written in bold in this makeup looks rule book. Stick to these and there is no way you will look “too out there”.
  • Your undertone is the bible for you in this one. It decides everything. From the foundation that you will put on to the blush that you will use.
  • Never use kohl or eyeliner. It gives a very defined look, something that is strictly what we are not going for.
  • Mascara is a win-win for nude makeup look, however, don’t go for dramatic eyes of extremely long and bushy eyelashes, it will look artificial and kill the whole no makeup vibe.
  • And in the end, a no-makeup look exists for you to wear on an everyday basis. So fret not, just stick by the mantra that sometimes ” Less is more”.

From prepping to the makeup and finally to remove it, its a process that requires a lot of care and attention. Follow the steps and you will be able to flaunt the neutral makeup look like a pro. Because after all, makeup isn’t a mask that you wear to cover your flaws it is something that reflects who you are from within. While applying the no makeup  look might be difficult than a normal makeup, we all know it will be worth it!
