Causes Of Wrinkles Under Eyes

Now, let us understand about some of the common reasons which could result in the formation of wrinkles[1] or fine lines on the skin under your eyes. Knowing about the precise reasons behind your issues will aid you in treating said issues more effectively and efficiently.

  • Aging: The most common reason why fine lines and wrinkles start forming and appearing on your skin is aging. Everyone grows older and their body deteriorates at a steady rate. It is one of the absolute truths of life. Hence, it is normal to get wrinkles on all parts of your skin including under the eyes as you age. This is because, as you age, the skin under your eyes starts becoming thinner and dryer and its elasticity drops and lead to the formation of wrinkles.
  • Facial movements and Expressions: You use your facial muscles[2] for communicating and other purposes all day every day. This causes creases on your skin which could ultimately lead to the formation of wrinkles. Actions which involve the skin around the eyes like laughing, squinting, frowning, etc. can be the common culprit causing wrinkles under your eyes.
  • Smoking: Smoking is highly injurious to your health and its effects show clearly on your skin. Studies have found out conclusively that smoking leads to facial wrinkles and causes skin damage even more than excessive sun exposure.
  • Sun exposure: Excessive exposure of skin to the sunlight causes damage to it due to the UV rays. This free radical damage is a common cause behind wrinkles on your face and under your eyes. The brightness from the sun also leads you to squint more which leads to the formation of wrinkles around your eyes.
  • Genetics: If your parents or grandparents have excessively wrinkled skin, you will also probably have that type of skin in the future. There is no way around this and your genetics will catch up with your sooner or later.
  • Imbalanced Diet: If you are not consuming essential nutrients for the skin Vitamins C, E, and A, it could lead to poor skin health and ultimately wrinkles.
  • Excessive Stress: Excessive stress does no favors to your health. It can even lead to the formation of wrinkles on your skin, including the skin under your eyes.
  • Lack of moisture: Lack of moisture and dryness of skin also leads to crinkling and formation of wrinkling. That is because dry skin is neither supple nor plump.
  • Inadequate Sleep: Lack of sleep prevents skin cells from regenerating properly leading to dull skin and wrinkles and fine lines on it.

Cosmetic Treatments For Under Eye Wrinkles

There are a variety of cosmetic procedures available today which help fade wrinkles and fine lines from under your eyes. These procedures vary widely in their pros and cons, price, and effectiveness of treating the wrinkles under your eyes. So, you should learn all you can about these so that you can make a smart informed decision about which one to go for.

Under Eye Wrinkles Botox

Botox [3]is actually a brand name. It is a chemical compound called Botulinum Toxin. It is one of the most popular treatments for wrinkles and tightening the skin around. Although, this is a temporary treatment and its effects wear off after 3 to 4 months.

The procedure is performed by injecting a tiny amount of purified Botulinum Toxin into the muscles below the delicate skin under your eyes. Then, Botox temporarily paralyzes the muscles to relax and fade the appearance of wrinkles, creases, and fine lines on your face. Though, Botox is infamous for giving a ‘stiff face’ which you undoubtedly have seen or heard about in the popular media. However, if you have this procedure performed by a good dermatologist, such risks are lowered significantly. A skilled and experienced professional will inject perfect measured amounts needed into your skin which will grant the benefits without stiffening up your face and skin.

Botox is a highly effective treatment for wrinkles and most people opting for this treatment see the results in just 3 to 4 days. It is also a quick and easy procedure and it will take an hour of your time at most. Although, this is not the most economical option as having Botox injected into a single area of skin would cost around 500 dollars.

Overall, Botox injection is a great and effective way to fight wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes but it is a temporary measure and you will have to go in again once every 3-4 months for some maintenance. It is great for smoothing out deep creases and dynamic wrinkles.

Laser Treatments

Laser treatments to remedy wrinkles under the eyes is rising in popularity steadily and rapidly. Many now claim and believe that it is the most efficient procedure for effectively removing wrinkles and fine lines from your skin.

The procedure is known as laser surfacing. It involves poking microscopic holes in your skin using heat energy from laser pulses. These lasers get deep into your skin to promote and stimulate new collagen and elastin production in your skin cells. This procedure appropriates the body’s ability to regenerate and replace damaged or older tissues of skin cells. Hence, this treatment will help regenerate your skin and consequently fade away any wrinkles and fine lines around your eyes. This procedure is permanent and you won’t have to visit your dermatologist multiple times to get rid of wrinkles under your eyes. The process is quick and easy to and would take just about 30 minutes. Laser resurfacing is a safe method and is great at removing superficial fine lines and wrinkles on your skin.

Although, its effectiveness and permanence make it quite an expensive treatment. It will run you anywhere between a thousand and three thousand dollars for a session. However, you need to be careful and consult our physician first as it could lead to some side-effects or complications. It may cause itching, swelling, and blistering on the skin for a few days after the treatment.

Chemical Peel For Under Eye Wrinkles

This is another effective and excellent answer to the wrinkles and fine lines which are causing you to worry more. In this procedure, a chemical solution is applied onto the skin to deeply exfoliate [4]it to remove the topmost dermal layers. These procedures do not use any standard eye wrinkle creams and moreover, the chemicals are applied so close to your eyes. Hence, you should only have this procedure performed by a trusted and certified dermatologist or esthetician.

In this treatment, your physician will apply a form of acid solution to your skin. This will eventually peel off to reveal a brand new, soft and smooth layer of skin. It will effectively get rid of wrinkles and fine lines around your eyes. Furthermore, it will treat other issues as well like acne scars, melasma, sagging skin, etc.

The recovery time after the procedure can be quite long but that will depend majorly on the type and strength of the peel. Your skin will be extra vulnerable and sensitive while it is recovering from the treatment so you will have to give some extra care to it. You will need to moisturize your sin well and regularly and shield it from sun damage and such while it is in the recovery period after the procedure.

Chemical peels come in different varieties and strength. Different types can be used to treat everything from superficial to deep wrinkles. Hence, the cost also varies greatly depending upon the type. It could run from anywhere between 150 dollars to thousands of dollars.

Microdermabrasion

This is another one of the cosmetic procedure to combat wrinkles and fine lines around your eyes. It is a non-invasive procedure and it works similarly to a chemical peel to remedy your wrinkles and fine lines. In this procedure, your physician sprays microcrystals into your skin which help peel away the outermost layer of your dermis. This process clears out dead skin cells from the surface of your skin to reveal a newer, healthier, and younger looking layer of skin underneath. It also stimulates the production of elastin and collagen which aids in your skin becoming smoother and stronger and wrinkle-free. Although, this procedure is not the best for treating deep wrinkles if you have superficial wrinkles an fine lines this procedure will bust them effectively.

Microneedling

Microneedling[5] is sometimes also known as dermarolling and in this procedure, your physician will make tiny holes into your skin using a rolling device. These tiny wounds and damage to the epidermis will promote new skin cells regeneration and boost collagen and elastin production in the skin cells. This procedure may sound out-dated or painful but it isn’t. It is actually one of the most effective and safe ways of getting rid of wrinkles and fine lines around your eyes. Also, it is only mildly irritating to the skin, we’re sure you have endured greater pains in pursuit and discovery of your beauty.

In this process, we effectively damage our skin so that our body creates new, fresh and young skin to replace it. This replaces old tissues to make your skin firmer and relatively wrinkle-free. However, this procedure is not the most convenient as you will need to have this procedure performed multiple times to get quantifiable results. Furthermore, it can prove to be quite harsh for sensitive skin types so make sure to consult with your doctor before going ahead with any kind of treatment.

Topical Creams

Nowadays, tons of cosmetic creams are available in the market which claim to bust your wrinkles quickly and effectively. The technology and knowledge behind such fields have come a long way. Now, many components have been identified which provide great effects in the treatment of wrinkles and fine lines. You can use these creams to remedy wrinkles all over your face and skin and not just under your eyes. Although, there are products which are specifically targeted at that portion of the skin. 1. What is the core reason behind under eye wrinkles? I am 31 years old and my mothers skin was absolutely fine and now she suddenly have started getting them?

  2. Can facial movement play a very important role when it comes to under eye wrinkles? Can they actually be a reason for a saggy skin?

  3. I have been smoking from past 10 years now and I see this facial changes that keep happening on my face. I was just curious to know if smoking can actually be a reason for this changes and how does it even work? How is something that I am taking in which isn’t an eatery make such drastic change on my skin. Please reply.

  4. @AvaBrown It totally depends on what you are ready to get done on your face. There are a lot of surgeries like botox which can repair the under eye wrinkles if you are someone for whom it is very important to look up to date and someone who cannot show their aging signs. If you are someone who does not like it but a slower process than botox is okay can opt for creams that is known to uplift the skin naturally. And if you are someone who is going completely towards this whole natural road then you can opt for ingredients that are rich in collagen as they can help tighten the skin really well. Choice is yours. you can also weigh in the pro and cons of each one of them and whichever best suits your priorities, you can pick that one up.

  5. What would be the top 5 sunscreen that can protect the skin from the first application itself and does require layers. I would also appreciate something that is not too greasy or whitening like most sunscreen. A normal lightweight sunscreen is what I seek. Please help me 😀

  6. Can under eye wrinkles caused due to genes ever be treated or they remain permanent like every other thing that we inherit from our ancestors and parents.

  7. Are cosmetic treatment for under eye circles really safe? Any one who has gotten it done who can probably help make me make this decision. I want to get a treatment done but I am not sure what side effects it can come packed with.

  8. How safe is botox? Also are they very expensive. I see these celebrities getting them every now and then and it seems safe from what I have heard but I wanted to know all the side effects that it comes with. Please 😀

  9. @LeiWang Well, It is a very difficult question. How safe it is totally depends on what you are comparing it with. If you are comparing it with natural remedies that can uplift your skin just by consuming them or applying them directly onto the face then yes it is very unsafe. However, is the quickest fix. If you are someone who wants that then botox is your best bet. Now how much does it cost simply depends on where you stay and can vary as well.

  10. @SophiaCox Well, there are a lot of reason why one can get wrinkle under the eye. It could be their age which is causing that. It can also be the kind of lifestyle you are living. Chain smoking, drinking alcohol or even something as common as lack of sleep can cause under eye wrinkles. This happens because the skin under the eye is very thin. It is because of the same reason that even sun exposure can cause a drop in the collagen which would break the elastin of the skin. The breakdown of collagen and elastin causes wrinkles and fine lines in your skin. Make sure you always apply a good amount of sunscreen before you step out of your house and try to cover your face with a cloth to be absolutely safe. Try sleeping on time or at least giving enough time for your body to rest. Bring necessary changes in your lifestyle and you will be good to go.

  11. @MiaYoung Yes, smoking is one of the main reason why the face starts to get wrinkled skin earlier than they should. There is a very simple logic behind it. The nicotine that is present in all kinds of cigarettes causes the blood vessels of the outermost skin to narrow. This makes the blood flow to your skin very slow. With less blood flow, your skin doesn’t get as much oxygen and important nutrients, such as vitamin A. And in turn all of this cause premature wrinkles on under your eyes and even on your entire skin. And sadly there is no solution to it apart from quitting smoking which at first might seem impossible but when done, you would be able to see changes that you never saw before. You skin will look young again and also look very fresh.

  12. @KayoJohnson The ideal rule or the most important thing to keep in mind when you decide to buy a sunscreen is its SPF. It also depends on where you live. If you live in areas that faces extreme hotness and UV rays then nothing less than 50 would work for you. If it is a medium temperature climatic place then 30 would suffice. I would suggest opt for 50 always to be extremely safe almost all the time.

Here is a list of 5 sunscreen that are SPF 50 and would protect your skin from UV rays damage that is causing the under eye wrinkles.

    1. Kiehl’s Activated Sun Protector Water-Light Lotion
    2. Australian Gold X-treme Sport Spray Gel Sunscreen
    3. Supergoop! Everyday Sunscreen
    4. Neutrogena CoolDry Sport Sunscreen Lotion
    5. Banana Boat SunComfort Sunscreen

Pick any one from these and use it everyday as soon as your are done taking a shower. Seal the deal by applying you favorite moisturizer.

  13. @Kayo I have been a religious user of the Australian Gold X-treme Sport Spray Gel Sunscreen and it blows my mind every single time. I stay in Riverside and it is quite hot here compared to other places. It is always important for me to be well equipped with sunscreen that is high on its SPF and this one never fails to impress me. You know it is strong when it can protect skin from burning. This does that with absolute grace. The one thing that I hate about sunscreen is how they smell, but this one is absolute bliss even in that section. Love it.

  14. @LeiWang Well, botox is like a permanent solution to your face that is wrinkled up and sagging. The skin that is under the eye requires maximum attention because it is very thin. If you are someone who needs to have a perfect looking skin then botox is the option for you. I am a news anchor for the entertainment sector and a saggy looking skin was not very appealing. I started hearing how I might be replaced because of the same flow. I was worried and my producer one day spoke to me about botox and how it can help me out. I tried it and it was bang on. I looked exactly like how I did and in fact a lot more younger. For starters, let me tell you how the botox work.

This would require you to go under the injection. Mind you not the knife but the injection. The specialist will inject your foreheads under eye and smile lines with the injection and this would stop the signals from the nerves to the muscles. This way the contraction of muscles stop and it gives these injected parts enough time to softly relax and soften. This way the wrinkles are subdued. It is also said that if you are facing wrinkles due to sun and gravity then botox wouldn’t work on it. Mine was due to aging and it did.

Now coming to the “side effects”.
There is list of side effects starting from allergic reaction, muscle stiffness, nausea, bruising and bleeding, dizziness, increased sweating, burning/painful urination and a lot more.
Hence it us advised to always get these treatment done with the most expertised hands only. While they most you a lot but at least you know they are using the best of things to treat your problems.
Botox cost depends from country to country but on an average it will cost you 300-500$.

Hope this helped. If you want to ask me any of my experience related question please drop it down below I would love to answer them as well.

  15. I was facing these premature aging signs and the most effected area was my under eye. It had developed under eyes circles and the skin was also forming wrinkles. I had no clue what to do and I started a little bit of research. I wa sure I was not looking for botox or any injection treatments, I also wanted to keep away from medicine. I though creams would be the best bet till I laid my eyes on this article. I was overwhelmed looking at so many recipes and I wanted to give it a try instantly. I though I will keep it very mellow and started with pineapple. I tried it for a week and then I shifted to honey. I started leaving honey overnight on my skin and after 1 month I could see my skin tightening and looking refreshed. Instead of just using it under my eye I used it all over my face and it was a complete transformation. I honestly don’t know which one of these worked on my skin. Weather it was pineapple or the honey but whichever did, I will forever be thankful to it. Do give it a try guys. 😀

  16. Did anyone use the olive oil treatment. If yes, can you please tell me how it worked for you guys. I have these saggy skin under my eye and I want it to be gone permanently. Thank you in advance.

  17. @Sofia Hi, I have been using olive oil since a very long time now. I cannot even track since when. I am 53 years old now and I don’t think I have used any other ingredient as much as I have used olive oil. I am so grateful that this article puts light on how it can even cure a problem like under eye wrinkles so easily. Technically by now, I should have gotten those wrinkles considering my age but I don’t think I will be reaching that stage anytime soon because I make sure I use olive oil everyday before I go to sleep. It is very important to apply it during the night, It gives the skin enough time to repair while your body is at rest. Do give it a try and make it consistent. All the best.

  18. It has been more than 2 months now and I have been using the coconut oil remedy to treat my under eye wrinkles. It did not work? Am I doing anything wrong. Can someone please suggest me if I can do something additional to it which will help me with my problem. Coconut oil is the most easy to access and that is why I would like to stick to it. Please reply.

  19. @Isabella It is very well possible that maybe the coconut is not an ingredient strong enough to work on your under eye wrinkles. Maybe the effect of the breakage of elastin is too deep and has been happening from quite some time now making it quite intense. I would suggest try using some other ingredient before qutting on it all together. You can also try to mix other ingredients mentioned above with coconut oil to see if that brings any changes. And if no natural ingredient works then there is always these creams that are filled with collagen that will bring the elasticity of your skin back and make the sagginess go away.

  20. @HanaFlores Well, yes. It is quite possible to get rid of your under eye wrinkles very easily but it is important that you protect the skin after the treatment otherwise it can always go back to the wrinkly state. It is only the botox effect that last longer even if you go under the skin or even smoke. However, it is a treatment that is done only on aging skin. If you wrinkles are due to sun damage then you can treat them using the pineapple treatment from above which is my most favorite and then protect the skin by applying enough sunscreen and also covering your skin whenever you go out. This is the only way you can say a permanent goodbye to wrinkled under eye.

  21. What is the ideal time when one should start experiencing these under eye wrinkles or wrinkles on all over the body due to aging? I want to know if mine is pre mature or natural.

  22. Which are some of the best and most trusted creams when it comes to wrinkles under the eye? Also can someone tell me a proper routine that I have to follow with the cream to protect my skin and bring it back to its original tight form. Thank you in advance.

  23. @AmeliaMartin I got premature aging signs due to excess smoking and there is nothing I regret more than that because everyone said I had a flawless skin. Well, I didn’t care for it much and there I was paying for my consequences. I wanted an immediate fix cause looking at it every day was putting myself in this state of depression. I researched a lot, consulted a lot of dermatologist and came up with these top 5 creams that would help you with your wrinkles under the eye. They are the best in the market and you will see evident changes from the very first usage itself.

Here is the list of top 5 creams that will work like magic on your under eye wrinkles. You can pick them up based on your priorities.

    1. Biopelle Radiance Eye Cream-$ 80
    2. Lumiere Bio-Restorative Eye Cream- $ 97
    3. L’Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler Eye Treatment- $ 7
    4. Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye- $ 62
    5. Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Eye Cream- 20

Its a good combination of drugstore and premium products. You can buy them as per your convenience of price range and availability. Hope it helped.

  24. @Amelia, I have been using the Lumiere Bio Restorative Eye cream since the time I turned 60. I am 63 now which makes it three years of loyalty towards it. It works nothing short of magic on my skin. It not just treat the skin under the eye from wrinkles but it also plumps it up to make it look young and breathing. As soon as I turned 60 the wrinkles under my eyes became visible. I was at a risky age and I didn’t wanted to try on anything that could be too risky. I thought a cream is the best option. All I have to do it apply it and leave it on for it to do its magic. I was just skeptical about how well it will do its job. After a thorough research, I finally ordered this cream and I am so grateful that I did. After the very first application, my skin looked softer and so much smoother. It looked so much like a canvas. With regular use, my wrinkles were barely visible. I wanted to check how well it will work on other parts of my face and I tried it around the corner of my mouth. The effect remained the same. It has been three years and I still go to this cream whenever I see my skin sagging. Loved it and I suggest and recommend I to everyone else as well.
