Everyone wants thick, long and healthy hair, but hair growth is influenced by genetics, hormones, nutrition, stress, scalp health and the hair-growth cycle. No homemade remedy can make hair grow several inches overnight or guarantee the “fastest” possible growth.
However, a good scalp-care routine can help reduce dryness and breakage, keep the scalp comfortable and make existing hair look healthier and fuller. One popular 3-ingredient combination uses onion juice, aloe vera gel and coconut oil.
Onion juice is commonly used in traditional hair-care routines, aloe vera helps soothe and moisturize the scalp, and coconut oil can reduce protein loss from the hair shaft. Together, they make a simple pre-shampoo scalp treatment.
You will need only three ingredients:
Use fresh onion juice and plain aloe vera gel without added fragrance or strong coloring whenever possible.
Take half of a medium-sized onion and peel it.
Cut it into small pieces and blend it into a smooth paste. Transfer the paste to a clean muslin cloth or fine strainer and squeeze out the juice.
Measure 2 Tbsp onion juice into a clean bowl.
Add 2 Tbsp aloe vera gel.
Next, add 1 Tbsp coconut oil. If the coconut oil is solid, warm it slightly until it becomes liquid. It should be only lukewarm, not hot.
Mix all three ingredients thoroughly until you get a smooth, slightly creamy hair treatment.
Prepare only enough for one application. Fresh mixtures are generally better than storing homemade preparations for several days.
Divide your dry hair into sections so you can reach the scalp easily.
Using your fingertips or a cotton pad, apply the mixture directly to the scalp, especially around areas where the hair feels thinner.
Massage gently for about 3–5 minutes using your fingertips. Do not scratch the scalp with your nails.
Once the scalp is covered, spread a small amount of the remaining mixture through the hair lengths, particularly if your hair is dry.
Leave the treatment on for approximately 30–45 minutes.
Wash your hair thoroughly with a mild shampoo and follow with conditioner if needed.
Use this treatment 1–2 times per week.
Onion is rich in sulfur-containing compounds, which is one reason it has become popular in traditional hair remedies.
There has been limited research suggesting that onion juice may help hair regrowth in certain types of patchy hair loss, but the evidence is not strong enough to claim that onion juice makes everyone’s hair grow dramatically faster.
Its main practical role in this DIY is as a scalp treatment rather than a guaranteed hair-growth medicine.
Aloe vera is one of the most popular natural ingredients used for scalp and hair care.
Its gel-like texture helps provide moisture without making the scalp excessively greasy. It can be particularly helpful when the scalp feels dry, tight or uncomfortable.
Coconut oil is especially useful for the hair shaft itself.
Research on hair oils has found that coconut oil can penetrate the hair and reduce protein loss better than some other commonly used oils.
Hair that breaks less easily can retain more length over time, which may make it seem as though your hair is growing faster.
For the best results, consistency is more important than using large quantities.
